Bully XL
Whilst banning further introduction of this breed is the right thing imo, I feel the Government should have gone further. I personally would have liked to have seen a mandatory specific type of muzzle for this breed and not one of choice. A muzzle won’t stop a dog attacking and an ill-fitting muzzle could easily get torn off in an attack if not of the right type.
One other thing…. dogs of this type can cause significant damage with or without as muzzle…I’ve seen it happen.

Re: Bully XL
I’d go one further and have all the ones currently in the UK removed from the UK or put to sleep.
I saw an image on the online BBC news channel yesterday of one of these dogs crouched down with a mothers young child as if to say ‘look how cute it is and wouldn’t hurt a fly’. Just looking at its eyes I thought I wouldn’t trust it for five seconds with a ball let alone a child.
But we all know it will happen again when someone get’s seriously hurt or worse and the same old rhetoric will come out of ‘measures have been put in place and lessons learned’.
Not much consolation for the poor s*d lying in hospital disfigured for life ….or worse, the morgue.

Agree Stephen, whilst their owners might say their dog wouldn’t hurt a fly, it is the potential that the dog has should it want to hurt a fly that is the problem. Many dogs will snap and back off, this breed bites and hangs on.

Our Cockerpoo is the most friendly non aggressive dog I've ever known. But I wouldn't leave her alone with a young child. You never know what a child might do that could cause the dog to react out of character.

At the end of the day all dogs are wild animals and they have the ability to resort to type.

Re: Bully XL
Hi Sir Merv...I’m with you on this one…over the years I have had 5 working collies all of which have had differing characters. Out of the five I would only have trusted one of them 100% the others in varying degrees with our present mutt being the least trustworthy of all of them. That being said, she stands out as being the most intelligent of all of our dogs, this is saying something when I compare her to my top dog “Scrim” who won several major finals at dog agility. Unfurtunatly, Lilly (hate the name, wife and daughters choice) has a few issues, most of which emanate from her being very highly strung. She is very sensitive to everything and displays traits that I wouldn’t normally put up with in a dog, however we have worked with them and around them to give her the confidence to be a loving member of our family. She is a very obedient dog but would I trust her to be alone with a child? no I wouldn’t, and the reason I wouldn’t is as you say Sir Merv the unpredictability of what a child might do, whether that be pulling at the dog, screaming, crying etc, any of which could be a trigger for a sensitive dog.Mervyn and Trish wrote: 17 Sep 2023, 19:36Our Cockerpoo is the most friendly non aggressive dog I've ever known. The problem with dogs who have big Jaws as with a Pit Bull or the XL Bully is the enormous power in thier Jaws and the damage they can do. I certainly would not trust them.
At the end day it's all down to how well trained the dog is, my feeling is, dogs that attack people have little or no proper training.

Re: Bully XL
They're not exactly the most handsome or appealing of dogs are they? Couple that with them slobbering all over everywhere and they would not be my first choice as a pet but clearly some people like them. I wonder if they are some form of status symbol or form of protection, but not for me.
I was taught to be cautious

Poor unfortunate chap, you really don't expect to be attacked while just walking your dog.

If my dog attacked person/dog in an unprovoked attack such as this it would be down the vets the following morning.Ray B wrote: 20 Sep 2023, 18:25Poor unfortunate chap, you really don't expect to be attacked while just walking your dog.
