Good will to all men

Unread post by Onelife »

Our daughter has just arrived back from Aberystwyth University and has just informed us that she popped into a super market in Welshpool on route…she was waiting in the queue and this old Geezer in front of her went to pay for his shopping with his card but the card was rejected, my daughter said the old chap was obviously in a panic as to what to do so asked if he had any cash to which he replied “I’ve got about £50 which won’t be enough”….my daughter only turned to the chap and said” if you give me the £50 I’ll make up the difference….the bill was £75.60…some would call it a act of kindness... I think she is bonkers…what do you think?

That's the third version of that story I have read over the last 2 days!

I might try shopping tomorrow without my card and only a fiver in my wallet.

You like living dangerously.

Personally I think a fiver is way too much.

She shouldn't have gone shopping with her dad.

Having discussed it further last night my take on it would be that I would have stretched myself to a fiver, perhaps a little more but £25  Our daughter was with her boyfriend at the time and he offered to pay the extra instead but our daughter decided to go it alone.
Her reasoning was that he was old and very embarrassed and she just felt for him, my wife said she would have done the same, not sure if that was to shut me up, but she did say to my our daughter that is was a lovely thing to do and sometime during her life the kind gesture will be returned in one form or another.…still not convinced myself but hey! ho, its Christmas.

That may be the case John but it was what my daughter told me and you or nobody else has the right to question her integrity ... or mine…if that is what you are implying?

If she did that, then it’s very admirable.
My Lodge financed a Christmas‘package’ for a dozen families who use the Bideford foodbank.
We chipped in a tenner each, which is small fry but has made a massive difference to these families.
They will each receive the food hamper and a few presents for their kids.
They are extremely appreciative.
Merry Christmas 🤶

Hi Barney…while you only have my word for it, I can honestly say that this kind gesture did happen as told to me by my daughter…she has no reason to lie or make up such stories to her mom and dad.

I did ask her why she didn’t leave a forwarding address but she said the old chap was in such a state that it didn’t seem appropriate at the time, neither did she want it anyway….surprising considering she is a first year PhD student, who apparently are always strapped for cash.

Although I think her gesture went over the top, she is a very kind natured person which I think she gets from her mom Dad. :D

Talking about Tesco’s, which is where this Christmas gift was given, we have two regular Tesco’s delivery drivers both of whom got £5 tips, as will the gentleman who delivers my prescription tablets, the garbage collector got theirs today, with our post man getting his last week. Phoned my local garage up this morning to ask if they could fit me in to have a front car lightbulb replaced…bring it down now Sam said…unfurtunatly it wasn’t a five minute job as they had to take the headlight out of the car to replace the bulb (took 30 minutes) when I asked what I owed him he said a fiver for the bulb and wished me a happy Christmas…I tried to offer him £20 but he wouldn’t take it….that being said John has probably heard several versions of this story in the past couple of days. ;) :)

Sounds like you’re a soft touch.

I might pop round and sing a rendition of Good King Wenceslasnessessessss, or something. £50 should cover it :)

Funny you should mention that Stephen because last week a few of our community got together to form a small choir (nine of them) they make their way round the village houses singing carols, this I believe is to raise funds for their local church, which of course is already the richest house in the village, but hey! ho, we know they will come begging every year so we are prepared with a small donation and a plate of “just out of the oven sausage rolls”

Don’t you wish you lived here?

You sold it to me when you mentioned fresh out the oven sausage rolls

Mrs S made some cracking sausage rolls earlier in the week. You need ‘Jus-Rol’ short crust pastry, and as far as I’m concerned the best sausage meat, which is from M&S. Lubbly jubbly.

What a lovely gesture by OL's daughter so near to Christmas.
It is most obvious where her kindness comes from, having a dad like Keith. 😇

Kind of you Ray, but no thanks. I think A&E are going to be busy enough as it is over the festive season without another case of food poisoning :)
