The discussion has been had several times surely...keep the age of consent at 16.
What I think we should do is to somehow stop our children from growing up so early....I know some will jump on me and be outraged but the way some young girls are allowed to dress and look when they go out is tantamount to cruelty....They are asking for trouble.
DK, I think young girls will always have their heads turned by attention from the opposite sex. Your 'age' suggestions show there will never be a clear age for consenting. When hearing or reading of a situation I have felt more comfortable with it being the same age group rather than a 2-3 year age difference. Having said that boys and girls mature at different ages.
Experimenting happens but I despair that a young girl hasn't listened to the sex education classes warning of the dangers of pregnancy or sexual disease.
Parents often fail their children by not telling them of the problems they could face in the future.
I just asked my OH , when he was 25 what age group would have opted for , his answer was none, they got in the way of his football.
Times have changed.
Andrea
I think that is the issue, the current law is out dated and needs a review, BUT that does not mean a lowering of the age of concent, it means the whole issue needs discussion in a sensible way, not a knee jerk reaction
How anyone in their right minds can find anything sensible in this ridiculous suggestion is beyond belief. Even the chambers where the silly woman works have condemned her remarks :-
"The Hardwicke chambers, where Ms Hewson works in London, said it dissociated itself from her comments.
In a statement, Hardwicke said: "We are shocked by the views expressed in Barbara Hewson's article in Spiked.
"We did not see or approve the article pre-publication and we completely dissociate ourselves from its content and any related views she may have expressed"
Discuss by all means, endeavour to find a way to reverse the apparent trend towards younger and younger girls becoming pregnant but reducing the age of consent would almost certainly have the opposite effect. This is presumably some sort of attention seeking by someone who should know better.
Yes, there is a bandwagon rolling onto which a number of people are trying to jump and there is a small element of sense in some of what she said but she completely lost that in making the call to reduce the age of consent which is what the media have picked up on, of course.
AOTH, You are ruling out those with Grandchildren. We have a 7 year old granddaughter who likes One Direction but the one for her is Aston from JLS. Why Aston ? Because he has the smiliest face. When she heard they were splitting up later this year she sobbed her heart out, and said he won't know now how much I love him. These groups have a lot to answer for.!!!
Some countries do not have an age of consent, in others it ranges anywhere from 12-18 .. in this country we have arbitrarily picked 16.
I am sure every country believes they have considered the possibilities properly.
I'm not so interested in witch-hunts or whatever against older men abusing young girls - although that needs to be heartily condemned and such "men" sorted out in such a way as to ensure they can never do it again - I was more appalled that anyone could even consider lowering the age of consent. If anything, it needs to be raised. However, the horse has bolted and nothing on this earth will now stop children below the age of 16 experimenting with sex. Society has rammed sex in our faces and made it far too easy for children to have access to it in the form of images and "sexy" clothes.
I remember, when I was about 11 years old, my mates and I found a discarded copy of Parade, a popular soft-porn rag of its day (only breasts and buttocks were shown) and we all had a giggle over these semi-naked girls, but not associating the images with the prospect of physical intimacy - we simply had no concept of it. Someone said "'ere, my willy's gone all hard" and it transpired we all had an erection. None of us knew why!!
Nowadays, we're teaching infants the mechanics of sex, without a thought that they might want to do a "practical homework". they are simply too young to understand and, while some may be physically capable of the act, none are emotionally mature enough.

teen pregnancies are actually falling and have fallen by 4% but you sound like you condone teens having sex and having babies? when under age ( Content edited )
Reading other posts, it seems I am not the only one who thinks this barrister is 'silly' and 'stupid'.
Jay, SS is very brave to write of his early experiences.
It made me laugh too. I can imagine the faces of these little boys . Wish I had got smilies on my phone.

Dear Andrea,
I'm sure she'll get over it. Miss AOTH was seriously into Justin Beeber but thankfully has come to her senses!

Hard to see how Hewson can keep her job now... Silly woman.
a touch naive, perhaps and somewhat under planned
but a subject that is in need of discussion at high level given the number of teen pregnancies.
it is very easy to dismiss people as silly or stupid or whatever, when the reality is they spoke, without working out the consequences of their actions
like a few folk on here
Saw two young girls with their family in my indian restaurant last week dolled up to the nines. They were young, but looked and dressed older than their actual years. I think the problems stem from young kids wanting it all, and wanting it now, whether it be sex, clothes, eating out, drinking, they just don't want to wait until they are older and parents help to facilitate that accelerated growing up.

I disagree, SS.
We are far too quick in this country to demand a resignation when we don't agree with someone ... if someone has stated something, especially something as controversial as this, then they must have some reason and maybe it is better to have the discussion and come to agreement/dismissal on the idea. I also have very little faith the media are reporting this fairly .. or possibly people are not reading the story in a 'fair' manner ... as I said earlier, it is a bit like Ken Clarke's comments on rape a while back, the media took the comments out of context and the public got all sanctimonious and hyper over very little.
As far as public bodies trying to distance themselves from the comments .. that is typical of such PC bodies, they run and hide when the media puts pressure on them .. they would stab anyone in the back if it suited them ... instead of maybe responding/dealing with the issues.

Reminds of a night out at a local Chinese restaurant last year. There was a group of young girls in wearing very low cut tops, very short skirts, FM boots and make-up by the shovel full ... it was a birthday party.
They were actually very well behaved but I honestly thought some of them looked like hookers. We were all amazed when a couple of the balloons rotated around and we realised that it was a 13th birthday party which meant that some of the girls may have not even been teenagers.
Disagree all you want, Ken, she made the comments and her Chambers have publicly disassociated themselves from them. It would not surprise me in the least to find she was requested to resign.
Trouble with the coutry is the leaders are all limp wristed wusses, who are scared of saying anything in case they lose votes, in the 4 year popularity contest we laughingly call an election
its about time they tackled issues like this head on and enforced the law, underage sex is a crime, wether it is some old perv and a teen ot two teenagers at it
why have laws when the police and politicos are too scared to use them.
SS
her chambers may distance themselves from this, which proves they are scared to tackle the issue, wouldn't want them representing me in a tough case if this is how much backbone they have??
