So Julian Assange finally pleads guilty to a specimen charge of stealing and publishing state secrets. Is set free on the grounds he has already done time awaiting extradition. Is now heading for Australia. For my money good riddance to the creep and I'll be happy to never hear of him again. So why on earth are Sky TV, and no doubt others, standing by to report live as his plane lands. He's not the Pope or Royalty.

I doubt for one minute that will ever happen. Now he is free he will restart his campaign in some form or other - this whole business looks to me like a cover up.

I’m surprised you have such strong views about him Sir Merv…what actually makes him the villain you make him out to be?

I find him extremely arrogant in appointing himself to be the authority on which state secrets should remain secret or not, and not caring whom he may put at risk by making his self authorised decisions. Governments may makes mistakes in their decisions but for better or worse they are elected, he is not. That's it in a nutshell.

I feel much the same as Merv. Here is a guy who was quite happy to see his informant prosecuted and sent to jail whilst he skulked off to the Ecuadorian embassy and hid behind diplomatic protection. When they got fed up with his antics they invited the police in to extract him and then we saw the unedifying spectacle of him being carried out of the building into a police van. Since then he has languished in Belmarsh whilst his lawyers argued against his extradition. He has now spent so much time under his own voluntary incarceration plus the time in prison he has probably served enough time that it wasn't worth the hassle of extraditing him anyway. Just a cowardly attention seeker in my opinion. I wonder who was paying the costs of his lawyers all this time.....?

As an aside, listening to the words of the Australian Prime Minister didn't he sound just like Dame Everage. You listen!!!

Probably because the authorities have more restrains on them as to what they can/cannot do unlike the BBC who have a lot more freedom, particularly across borders. Also there is nothing to say that the authorities haven't done the same but have not been able to co-ordinate any action.

Where smugglers are concerned people don’t have names, they are known by the amount of £’s they have on their heads…. whilst it could be argued that the BBC have done a good job in seeking out one of the smugglers, he will be easily replaced by another smuggler eager to make easy money.
At the end of the day the deterrent has to be stronger than the promise of milk and honey…. land them, feed them, stop farting around and put them on the next available ship to Rwanda…they are illegal migrants.

I saw a bit of it (could not cope with watching any more). I thought our lot were bad but by comparison to what is on offer in the States ours are pretty good - at least Starmer can string three words together into a coherent sentence! At the moment I would be embarrassed to be an American.

I think both the Democrat and Republican hierarchys are failing the Western world by allowing Biden and Trump to be their presidential candidates. No matter how undemocratic it would appear, both parties should be searching their rule books to find a legitimate way to remove them from the ballot.

I think it's scary. If he can mix up names, what else might he do? I can't believe there's not some mechanism to remove a President if he's shown to be medically unfit and Biden's showing the world how unfit he is.

If they don't stand him down they're handing the election to Trump, and that's pretty scary too.
