Re: General Election 2024
It is estimated a day's Bank Holiday would cost the economy £2.9 billion. I would rather that sort of money was saved and spent elsewhere.
Personally a win on Sunday will be the cherry on the cake. A day's Bank Holiday would just be a bonus if I was working but nothing more than that.

When I was self-employed I always worked bank holidays, which is probably why I now live in a lovely country estate nestled in the lovely south Shropshire hillsoldbluefox wrote: 11 Jul 2024, 19:58It is estimated a day's Bank Holiday would cost the economy £2.9 billion. Today's topic - prison overcrowding (again)
I have the perfect solution - send then to Rwanda. The new government has said that they are no sending asylum seekers there and we have paid Rwanda untold millions so let's get something for our money. Looks like a win, win to me.
Right - next issue please.

I hope OL will enjoy the views from his country estate overlooking the forest of wind turbines Labour plan for the countryside. How can this be allowed to happen, they can be seen miles away. I hope it will become NIMBY.
Don't worry, be happy

Fact or wishful thinking? The justice secretary says 1,000 additional trainee probation officers will be recruited by March next year.

Where are these 1000 trainee probation officers currently, if they are working in another field then who is going to do their jobs next March, if they are unemployed then why are likely to be suitable?david63 wrote: 12 Jul 2024, 15:40Fact or wishful thinking? The justice secretary says 1,000 additional trainee probation officers will be recruited by March next year.

Most won’t be…. which will make the process just a tick box exercise where all but the stupid will meet the criteria for asylum.towny44 wrote: 12 Jul 2024, 21:00Where are these 1000 trainee probation officers currently, if they are working in another field then who is going to do their jobs next March, if they are unemployed then why are likely to be suitable?david63 wrote: 12 Jul 2024, 15:40Fact or wishful thinking? The justice secretary says 1,000 additional trainee probation officers will be recruited by March next year.

Re: General Election 2024
I thought we were talking about probation officers to check that early release prisoners were behaving themselves, not asylum claim checkers. Although the same applies to them, where are they going to come from.Onelife wrote: 12 Jul 2024, 21:34Most won’t be…. which will make the process just a tick box exercise where all but the stupid will meet the criteria for asylum.![]()
I do hope those who switched sides and helped labour to their landslide victory live to regret their ill conceived choice when the wheels fall off the starmer wagon train.

Living alongside the thousands of doctors, nurses, teachers, police officers, new border force and whatever new group we will have next week that Labour are creating.
Sadly all of this is just sound bites as we know from experience that it will not happen.

And even if there was a half hearted attempt. It takes up to five years to train to become a doctor let alone other professions which means allot of the wishful thinking on the governments part probably won’t even happen in their term of governing.

It will be years before the Tories recover and probably three or four different leaders.
None of the present bunch could win a general election.

Re: General Election 2024
Everyone said the same about labour after their 2019 defeat, remember a week can be a lifetime in politics. Starmer has promised change, but without the finances to effect that change the media will be quick to call him out for failing.barney wrote: 13 Jul 2024, 09:51I’d be surprised if they didn’t get a second term Stephen.Stephen wrote: 13 Jul 2024, 07:54And even if there was a half hearted attempt. Of course if he gets the economy increasing fast enough, he might be able to do a few of the things he has promised. But I doubt the world economy will be as helpful to him as it was to Blair and Brown.

Re: General Election 2024
Remember though that Labour did not win the GE but the Conservatives lost it.
The Conservative vote went to the Lib Dems and Reform so a lot will depend on how those two parties perform over the next four/five years but I have to agree that I cannot see an obvious leader who can unite the party and more importantly the country anywhere in the current Conservatives - they need another Boris who for all his faults did have some personality unlike virtually all the "grey men" around at the moment.

Let's not forget that Boris got more votes when he won his GE - a lot more - than Starmer just did.

Re: General Election 2024
For all the gaffs and mistakes the Tories made which made them authors of their own downfall I do believe the Covid epidemic and the amount of money ploughed into the country to save jobs and support workers has had more of a detrimental effect on our economy than we realise. Literally we poured billions of pounds into the country all of which has to be paid back so it comes as little surprise our economy is struggling.
I wonder what our economy would look like had there been no epidemic, let alone no war in Ukraine.
I think it was Boris who said something to the effect that Starmer's beach is long and wide but the sand is very thin. Unless he and his government get it right it will not take much of a swing before his majority starts to dwindle.

I messaged our doctor at 11am on Tuesday morning. Got a face to face appointment 3.45pm the same day. You should move here. Oh hang on, forget I said that.
