It'll never change. There will always be the haves and the have nots.

there are far more doing a fair day work for what basically amounts to a subsistence wage
So you agree then that those who have done a fair day's work throughout their lives, even though they may not have been earning a lot, should now be penalised by having the winter fuel payment taken off them at a moment's notice?

As posted on the General Election thread…

“Not before time scrapping the winter fuel allowance for well off folk like us, hopefully they’ll do the same for the Christmas bonus and if they want to make some real saving they should stop child benefit... for all but those who really need it”

Unfurtunatly John, it matters not who is in power, strikes are the result of Governments not appreciating the value of its work force…this is especially so for those working in menial jobs.

It’s also been the case that the redistribution of wealth is decided by those with wealth which probably has something to do with disparities in wage recognition.
What have strikes got to do with stopping the winter fuel payment, except for pensioners on means tested benefits, or dropping the cap on social care payments for nursing home care?

There is no such thing as "redistribution of wealth" - those with wealth avoid such draconian measures. All it results in is those with slightly more to become level with those who have slightly less. It has never worked in any other country (Russia, China for example).

They have to get the money from somewhere to pay the wage rises that the strikers have been asking for demanding.

I have a suspicion that the strikes were maintained solely as a way to influence the election. Once it had been called there was no way Labour would have wanted the unions to settle, and I would not be surprised if there was a little sweetener in the settlement.

Isn’t this the main reason why workers strike?

What do you do when you think you’ve been short changed?

I don’t think it’s the case that distribution of wealth can’t/didn’t work; it’s never been allowed to work, mainly because those who distribute the wealth decide on what they deem to be fair, hopefully the labour party will provide the best chance of making this country a fairer country for all. Besides, whether we like it or not we have this Government for the next five years so I live in optimism for a brighter, fairer future, especially as most of you voted for this political system to continue …. As an aside, I’m starting to warm to Rachael Reeves. :)

Whatever….it looks like this decision (if it is accepted) will be the best chance of recruiting and retaining more doctors.

The system that failed OL was that the UK voters actually vote in a PR fashion, which is not the sensible way to vote in a FPTP system. FPTP is only sensible for a 2 party system, as they have I the US.
Unfortunately we still want to be able to vote for the person we think will represent our constituency in the best way possible, which is very naive in a FPTP system.

Had I have voted I would have voted for the party that best represented the country, but most were left with no choice other than to vote for the person that would best represent their constituency.

What a sad reflection on how our political system has failed our country.

It's not the systems fault, it's the stupidity of the voters, who don't understand how to operate the FPTP system. If they genuinely want to vote for a candidate and not a party, then they should have voted for PR when they had the chance in 2011.

Tell me something Screwy…seeing that the hate preacher Anjem Choudary has been given 25 years will his food preferences be given consideration being Muslim? I’m hoping Halal meat will be off the menu leaving him to survive on cabbage and lettuce leaves for the rest of his life.

All meat in prison is Hahal.!! I know it grates. Different utensils for serving Muslim meals.!

I was once questioned by the chair of the board of visitors as to why I didn’t give the Muslims a cream egg at Easter. I said I believe Easter is a Christian festival therefore they’re not entitled. Bollocks to them.

It certainly does grate. Some schools are the same. Why pander to a minority by inflicting a horrendous practice that breaks all animal cruelty rules on all? If Muslims can't eat humanely slaughtered meat there are plenty of vegetarian options.

I’m with you on this Sir Merv…I know why we tolerate this cruel practice but no way is it right. Theses religious rituals should be made a criminal offence.

After 2 days of absolute grief and the senseless murder of 3 sweet innocent little girls, the thugs of the right wing have shown total disrespect to the families and the town with their thuggish behaviour..

Apparently it is the "rent a mob" English Defence League. Only yesterday a warrant was issued for their "leader" Tommy Robinson for contempt of court as he fled the country rather than defend himself in court.

Personally I round the lot of them up and ship them out to some far flung corner of the planet never to be seen again.

One thug was plainly shown on the news last night picking up a brick , I assume in someone's garden ,and throwing it at the police.
It shouldn't be that difficult for the police to identify him, assuming they don't already know him, and drag him to the courts. We then rely on a judge to send a message to thugs that we have had enough, through a sentencing that reflects the crime.
Don't worry, be happy

Farage should keep his mouth shut unless he has something constructive to say
"Was this guy being monitored by the security services? Some reports say he was, others less sure," he says.

"The police say it's a non-terror incident [...] I just wonder whether the truth is being withheld from us. I don't know the answer to that, but I think it is a fair and legitimate question."
In one go I suspect that the Reform party have lost any support they had in Southport.
