Re: Current Affairs 2024
I'm convinced nothing will happen to sort the NHS until a cross party group gets together and sorts the whole thing out, something acceptable to all parties. No one party is ever going to dare to do anything radical to the NHS. When the NHS started it was never intended to do what it is expected to do today. All parties seem to agree that something needs to be done, so why don't they get together and do it?
My own opinion, take the power out of the hands of managers and put it where it belongs in the senior doctors and nurses. It seemed to work well when I was nursing back in the sixties, I'm sure it could again.

With the right calibre of doctors and nurses my wife has expressed the same views… also a retired nurse.CaroleF wrote: 03 Aug 2024, 19:59I'm convinced nothing will happen to sort the NHS until a cross party group gets together and sorts the whole thing out, something acceptable to all parties. Not certain that top notch medics should be lost to medicine by shunting them into administrative roles for which they are not trained.
Management is a separate skill to medicine and needs to have top class administrators. But maybe hospitals need fewer admin staff than they have at present, and possibly slicker systems to operate the very many machine dependant appointments that we have nowadays.
Having said that our hospital trust does not seem to have long waiting lists, as I imagine many others don't either, so maybe the ones that do could learn from the good ones, but not sure politicians or civil servants are the correct organisations to oversea such a change.

And let a few more thugs out of prison early to make room for them in the cells.
Come to think of it there's a barge going free in Dorset.

Re: Current Affairs 2024
The problem is the calibre of the managers and their brief. I have had a resection of a pituitary tumour fairly recently, and Sue has had two synchronous bowel tumours removed by laparoscopy in 2018 with adjuvant chemotherapy. my brother is receiving excellent teatment for a serious illness, in another part of the country. Neither of us will say a bad word about the NHS. The media needs to get off their backs. We dont need another system, if it aint broke dont fix it, and despite what the media say, it aint broke.towny44 wrote: 03 Aug 2024, 23:01Not certain that top notch medics should be lost to medicine by shunting them into administrative roles for which they are not trained.

You guys are a bit out of step with the Mail and Telegraph readers, Many of whom are sympathising with the rioters, blaming Labour for the boats {thats a laugh after the past 10 years}, with very little condemnation of the looting, and gratuitous violence. When I look at the photographs of the rioters I wonder if snatch squads wouldn't be more effective than baton rounds and water cannon. Injury lawyers will be queueing up if some of the rioters are injured.

What I cannot understand is what the hell has any of this to do with the murder of three little girls and the stabbing of 10 others in Southport.

Re: Current Affairs 2024
The problem is John upper management only see what’s on a spread sheet and get middle management to devise new systems to meet them, this along with government targets impacts greatly on the quality of nursing care, both administratively and hands on nursing. My wife finished her career (25 years in nursing) early because she felt that patients’ lives were being put at risk… mainly because hospitals/managers were having to meet (tick Box) government targets. My wife was an extremely respected nurse specialist and yet she was often excluded from meetings which discussed how management wanted to streamline her department.towny44 wrote: 03 Aug 2024, 23:01Not certain that top notch medics should be lost to medicine by shunting them into administrative roles for which they are not trained.

The setting of targets and the application of them are part of any hospital plan so yes, I agree that you do need good managers but theses managers need to understand that specialist nurses and seasoned doctors come with a vast amount of knowledge both managerial and clinical and should, in my opinion, be part of any decision making that requires system changes.
Its understandable why many nurses on leaving the NHS go onto take good management positions in other employment opportunities.

As a Mail reader I find that sweeping generalisation grossly insulting Frank, and not at all the tone of the copy of the Mail I received. Maybe yours was different? I am sure most decent people find the events unfolding disgraceful and tragic, whatever paper they read.Frank Manning wrote: 04 Aug 2024, 11:49You guys are a bit out of step with the Mail and Telegraph readers, Many of whom are sympathising with the rioters, blaming Labour for the boats {thats a laugh after the past 10 years}, with very little condemnation of the looting, and gratuitous violence.screwy wrote: 03 Aug 2024, 23:19So the government says the Police have their full support, let’s see it.!

The riots are instigated by mindless thugs feeding off a tragedy.
The only blame that can be attributed to all the main parties is their dismissal of concerns about uncontrolled immigration for many years, under both Labour and the Tories, which was resulted in fertile ground for these thugs to sew and propogate their evil bile.

Nothing at all but it's lit the blue touch paper after years of making concessions to immigrants, doing nothing about the levels of immigration, being defenceless against illegal immigrants. As one woman said "We want our country back". Ithink that is the root of the problem. Either our politicians don't understand or they are just not listening.david63 wrote: 04 Aug 2024, 11:54What I cannot understand is what the hell has any of this to do with the murder of three little girls and the stabbing of 10 others in Southport.

Re: Current Affairs 2024
That is just an excuse - any one of a dozen incidents could have triggered all of this. There are those out there who are just looking for a fight and it is totally reprehensible to associate it with Southport. There are families in Southport who this time last week were enjoying life and who have now had their lives totally torn to shreds and many of whom will never get over it. All this is doing is rubbing salt in the wounds and if it was up to me I would shoot the lot of them without a moments hesitation.oldbluefox wrote: 04 Aug 2024, 17:11it's lit the blue touch paper after years of making concessions to immigrants, doing nothing about the levels of immigration, being defenceless against illegal immigrants.
Yes I am annoyed angry as at one point in my life I lived less than a mile away from what happened in Southport and still have family members in Southport.

Re: Current Affairs 2024
The thugs who hide behind a face covering and throw or destroy things in what looks like a riot should be treated as Terrorists. They commit an unlawful act and quietly dissappear. The use of snatch squads should be deployed to bring them in to face justice. Those others can be captured on film and rounded up later.
By the look of the disturbances, some would fall into the Terrorism Act.

Let's just make it clear, I am not in any way trying to justify the violence. I feel just as disgusted as anyone by what is happening. As I said it has nothing to do with what happened in Southport.

Re: Current Affairs 2024
I do understand your position on this issue Foxy, but the problem is that peaceful protesters against Labours open door immigrationare policy are being used by the likes of EDL, and probably some are being dragged into the rioting that is taking place.
There does not seem to be any likely meeting of minds between the peaceful anti immigration protesters and those who are sympathetic towards the immigrant population, and of course the ethnic minorities themselves. The result is that any attempted peaceful anti immigration protest is going to attract extremists from both the right and the left, and result in rioting, which I am fairly certain is not what the peaceful people of either viewpoint really want.

Spot on towny. Thank you.
So far the emphasis from the government has been on the riots but the underlying issue is uncontrolled immigration and integration both of which are being largely ignored.

Re: Current Affairs 2024
I shall cover myself by stating unequivocally that I don’t condone the violent behaviour seen these past few days, however, let’s not kid ourselves that we didn’t see this coming. Our government’s inability to tackle Islamic protesters waving jihadist flags and chanting “Allahu Akbar,” (God is Greater) around London coupled with uncontrolled illegal migration was always going to be the spark that ignites the blue touchpaper …regrettably, the actions of the far right only demonstrate that there is growing frustration in society about how our country is being pulled apart.
I hope something good can come out of this civil unrest, and I do believe there is a way in which this can happen…Kier Starmer should see this as a wake-up call and use all his tough talking about how he is going to tackle these kinds of public order offences by introducing laws which prohibit protests that insight hatred/division amongst our multicultural society. If his government is to achieve this, they will have to first recognise that the hijacking of Islamic teachings by the extremist elements of their Religion will continue to do so if this country doesn’t cultivate/insist on more integration amongst its cultures…especially those who choose to use this country, but reject its ways.
