Crafty Beeb have updated the table since I looked with an extra gold for US. They claimed it was the final table before. Must have had a recount.

I'd back Keefie's 4-2-1 scoring. Makes silver worth twice as much as bronze and gold worth twice as much as silver.

Excellent question Sir Merv, nothing springs to mind why your suggestion shouldn’t be considered…There is already a recognition that Gold is a bigger achievement than silver or bronze so by using a points system of let’s say 4-2-1 you are recognising that 4 points is better than 2 and 1 respectively but you are also recognising which country has done better overall.
Currently according to the Beeb this is the state of play:
1. USA
2. China
3. Japan
4. Australia
5. France
6. Holland
7. GB
Using OL's scoring system matters change appreciably:
1. USA
2. China
3.France
4. GB
5. Australia
6. Japan
7. Holland

Go and get it sorted Keefy although I don't think the Aussies or Japanese will be happy with it.
Only a teacher could have presented those figures as precisely as you have Foxy  :) …however, I’m going to have to decline your suggestion of putting forward the case as those who speak out in Japan have a tendency of not returning home. It was Sir Merv’s suggestion so let’s all wish him a fond farewell... before it’s too late. :(

Regarding your earlier post about Laura Kenny, what an absolute treasure she is, her enthusiastic personality shines through whatever sport she commentating on.

I was just curious what effect it would have.
As a Republican you have my vote to put forward such an excellent idea. We have every confidence in you. But why risk fellow monarchist Merv having to face the Japanese. His Majesty would never forgive me if he never returned. I feel sure you will be able to charm your way, they are very impartial to chocolates.

As much as I enjoyed the majority of the games, am I on my own in thinking that the closing ceremony was a load of Bollocks.?

It was certainly as boring as most of the opening ceremony, both actually made the UKs 2012 opening and closing ceremonies worthy of Oscars.

I was thinking that the staging was some kind of space ship which would fly off into outer space, unfurtunatly it, as you say, turned into a load of Bollocks.

That being said, I think the French put on a fantastic show overall.

Agree. Overly long. The bit with the rings could have been done in less than half the time it took.

But the management of the games themselves went well.
Would like to have seen more of the sailing events.

For the closing event I would be quite happy to see just the athletes parading in and the handover to the next host country.
End of formal ceremony.
Then for those wanting more an extended "party in the stadium"

Euronews reported this morning that the EU topped the medal table.
Adding all the medals from EU members, they were top by quite a long way.

I suppose that they have an external border, a currency , a parliament, a president and an anthem, so are theoretically a perfect example of a country.

There was an interesting medal table on the Beeb this morning that ranked countries as medals per head of population - which is probably a much more fair way of showing achievement meaning that USA was way down the table.

Number of entrants per event is by individual country so that's how their medals should be counted

That's one of the many reasons I voted out. The Beurocrats thinking the EU was a country and trying to run it as such, trumping our elected national governments for their own ends.

This afternoon we have been watching the finals of the rhythmic gymnastics competition which was hardly, if at all, covered on the Beeb. Pity really to miss out on this mix of ballet, gymnastics and dexterity with ribbons, balls, hoops and juggling clubs. They really are very elegant and skilful. It's a pity they don't get more screen time, a lot more entertaining than break dancing!!

She may not be waring a Medal round her neck but she certainly deserves one for this performance…
