Not before time...
Home Secretary Yvette Cooper has promised to crack down on people "pushing harmful and hateful beliefs" and "kickstart" a new approach to fighting extremism in the wake of riots that broke out across the UK earlier this month.
The Home Office said the scheme will look at the rise of both Islamist and far-right extremism in the UK, as well as wider ideological trends, including extreme misogyny or beliefs that fit into broader categories like fixation on violence.

I fully endorse these measures and the sooner they are introduced the better for our country, its culture and its values.

I fear Mrs Balls will be as inadequate as the previous Home Office ministers, going all the way back to Teresa May.
It’s a poison chalice.
It’s easy to say what you want to do, a lot more difficult to do it.

Indeed Barney, but at least they are saying it which is a big step forward from waiting for it to get worse.
I don’t think the previous Government could bring themselves to use the word “Islam” in any context where ideological trends, including extreme misogyny or beliefs that fit into broader categories like fixation on violence are concerned. We need to stop pandering to specific cultural groups and educate them into our own cultural beliefs and values.

I’d prefer she prioritised attempting to stop the hundreds a day that are rocking up on the coast.

I think that takes us back to what you said in your first post…” It’s easy to say what you want to do, a lot more difficult to do it” Busting the gangs would take a whole lot of cooperation from the French and whilst we have given them £££millions to patrol their borders their efforts appear to be little more than a gesture of inconvenience. There is absolutely no incentive for the French to stop boats crossing the channel and paying them millions more in the hope that they will help bust the gangs, is I’m afraid, the equivalent of you and me going to the moon. I think we should have stuck with the Rwanda policy and equip all boat people with a computer and free internet connection so that can tell those who wish to join them to pop on the next available boat.
