Truly one of the great actresses of our time, so memorable in Downton Abbey and Marigold Hotel

The news flashed up on my phone and I said, Oh no, out loud. Such an amazing actress and so well known to all generations whether it's as a Shakespearean actress, winning an Oscar for The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, and known to children in Harry Potter and to millions of TV viewers all over the world as the Dowager in Downton Abbey. I was watching the documentary of the four great actresses and dames, Dame Maggie Smith, Dame Judi Dench, Dame Eileen Atkins and Dame Joan Plowright. The humour between these four was so lovely to watch. What an amazing actress Maggie Smith was, and as many people have said while paying tribute to her, a very private person.

The ‘Quartet’ was another great film she was in, among many, with an excellent accompanying cast.

She certainly made her Downton character unforgettable, and it was somewhat prophetic that the Dowager Countess was killed off in the last film.
RIP Dame Maggie Smith.

Superb in The Lady in the Van and Marigold Hotel although in Downton Abbey she took on a different persona altogether and could freeze water with just one look. She was an incredible talent.
