Texting drivers to be fined

The dangers of eating have been stated, but surprisingly nobody has mentioned smoking. There's the fiddly job of getting one out of the packet, then the thing has to be lit, and if you accidentally drop it, there's the risk of burning yourself or potentially setting the car on fire. Not problems you usually associate with having a sandwich; - though I do know of one person who lost control of his car after pouring hot coffee in his lap.
He also lost his licence for a while!

I haven't smoked in my car for years but when I did it was amazingly easy to take a cigarette out of a packet and light it without ever taking your eyes off the road, not that I think it is any more acceptable than using a mobile, eating a sandwich or drinking, if I can give up smoking on a 4/5 hour journey then I think all the other distractions should be easy to give up too

Have you never seen a teenager text ....It is quite an amazing site, they can have a conversation with the person sitting next to them and send texts at the same time, they never look at their hands and can text at about 2000 words a minute...Well, very fast anyway...Their thumbs are as thick as their thighs....Me I text at about 2 words an hour.

I welcome the crack down on people texting while driving...about time too.

I once watched a guy on a roller coaster rolling a cigarette at umpteen and a bit miles per hour yet he never took his eyes of the track ... that is what he can do but the others only ' think ' they can do the same but cannot.

Smoking is banned in company vehicles, as is texting and phoning by any decent company
there is a device available that cancels out the signal and stops the phone being used
some people used them on the underground and got fined by the police for breaching peoples rights to phone, you couldn't make it up

I have one of those devices. It is about the size of a mobile phone but chews 9-volt batteries.
I haven't used it in years (not quite sure where it is now) but I used to use it when I was sitting in airports trying to read or do work and someone decided to sit beside me and shout into their mobile phone. It worked really well, but as you say, some idiot decreed that my ability to work in a quiet area is of less importance than someone shouting into a mobile phone.
