With respect Foxy, we rarely learn from the past, it is those who have endured the past that learn from it.oldbluefox wrote: 22 Oct 2024, 19:01It's in the far past and that's where it belongs. History is about learning from past mistakes. I can't be doing with those who dig up our past and start applying modern day practices to put it right. It's an impossible task.

I would disagree OL. Looking back at our history I would say we are much better informed compared to days past but history will also judge whether we got it right or not. None of us will be around to find out.

I’m sure my passing will bring much relief to the forum but I will rest easy knowing I will be remembered long after John has joined me

Re: Not Our King
I’m glad Starmer has immediately cut down the talk of financial reparations, given the state of our own economy.
I did my family tree during the first lockdown and got back to 1660.
I can 100% confirm that none of my ancestors were slave owners so I’m not prepared to contribute anything
I have noted however that three different black/mixed race celebrities who have been on Who do you think you are, have had slave owning ancestors.
Mist admit they looked devastated when they found out.
Maybe they could chuck in a few quid?

I don’t know how this excellent article escaped my attention but it’s still worthy of posting as it goes some way into explaining how taxpayers money was/is wasted.

Libdem with his head in the clouds. No surprise there then.
Nordic countries don't have lavish coronations, that's true. Neither does Russia who shot their royal family and look what a great range of Presidents they have had, some very elaborate and expensive processions too. Just another dynasty but I'm happier with the one I've got thank you very much.

Re: Not Our King
Replacing a UK constitutional head of state with an elected head of state is so far removed from that of the authoritarian dictatorship they have in Russia.
Whilst the term “Republic” implies “doing away with the Monarchy” I give this country more credit in being able to make a transition to that of an elected head of state with little to no restructuring/change to our present governmental system…it would just be a hell of a lot cheaper. With the passing of King Charles, we will be faced yet again with another farcical coronation full of pomp, self-serving elitism... costing little short of another £100m …for that kind of money we could build a new prison and house all the freeloaders in it…I would however make allowances for Catherine, Harry and Meghan as they have all suffered enough.
Right, you’ll all be pleased to hear I am now going to crawl back under my stone and await the next Royal Scandal

Quite possible that supporting the Royal Family may be cheaper than supporting all the Boat People who keep landing on our beaches.
