Is that going to make any difference to anything that will affect my life?

If there is a future for the conservative party then I think Kemi is their best hope…I’m expecting to see a lot of new faces sitting alongside her.

I loved the utter love and respect both Kemi and her husband Hamish had for each other when the result was announced.

Re: Current Affairs 2024
I like the way that the Labour Party are unified in their reaction.
Keir Starmer:
Keir Starmer:
Labour Party chairwoman Ellie Reeves was less complimentary in her reaction, labelling the four-month leadership campaign:The first Black leader of a Westminster party is a proud moment for our country," he says. "I look forward to working with you and your party in the interests of the British people."
"a summer of yet more Conservative chaos and division" that showed the party had learned nothing from its general election defeat.
"They could have spent the past four months listening to the public, taking responsibility for the mess they made and changing their party." Reeves says. "Instead, Kemi Badenoch’s election as leader shows they’re incapable of change."

I know very little about her.
More interesting news today is that after three months in power Labour have slipped behind the Tories in the polls. That was a short honeymoon. I can hear Angela sharpening the knives already.

I thought they were all "BLACK", even the very pale mixed race ones.

Re: Current Affairs 2024
At least we now have some clear blue water between the two main parties.
Labour has moved further to the left since winning power and the Tories have moved further to the right in attempt to get power.
The choice is with the voters.
Personally, I very much doubt that she will still be leader come the next election. I think the Tory leading in to the next election is currently under the radar but most definitely a centrist.

Rachel getting excited that she is the first female Chancellor whilst the Tories are now onto their third female PM and their second of colour.
Personally I couldn't care less what they are. I just want them to do a good job.

I think we have at least ten years with them so we better hope they can do a good job…and on that note, I’m more optimistic than I have been with previous Labour party set up’s.oldbluefox wrote: 02 Nov 2024, 20:14Rachel getting excited that she is the first female Chancellor whilst the Tories are now onto their third female PM and their second of colour.

You're more optimistic than I am. In their policies they seem very naive and have failed to appreciate the consequences of what they are doing. I fear worse is to come.

But traditionally they usually let them lose a GE before giving them the chop.barney wrote: 02 Nov 2024, 19:14At least we now have some clear blue water between the two main parties.

And Kemi is their fourth female party leader, but unlikely be their 4th PM.oldbluefox wrote: 02 Nov 2024, 20:14Rachel getting excited that she is the first female Chancellor whilst the Tories are now onto their third female PM and their second of colour.

Re: Current Affairs 2024
You're worse at picking bad, and even worse Labour govts than picking your gee gees., Blair won 3 general elections, but mainly by not undoing everything that the Tories had put in place. In fact Gordons first budget could have been penned by Kenneth Clarke. This lot.have swung off on a 180 tangent which history tells us is not a good idea, slow and steady was Gordon (Prudence) Brown's policy, until his relaxed grip on the banks scuppered his chances of winning a GE.Onelife wrote: 02 Nov 2024, 21:46I think we have at least ten years with them so we better hope they can do a good job…and on that note, I’m more optimistic than I have been with previous Labour party set up’s.oldbluefox wrote: 02 Nov 2024, 20:14Rachel getting excited that she is the first female Chancellor whilst the Tories are now onto their third female PM and their second of colour.

Re: Current Affairs 2024
The Labour party have short memories. Wasn't it when the Gordon Brown government left power that they left a note for the incoming Chancellor saying that there was no money left! There must be a limit on how long Labour can refer back to the last Conservative government, they do need to give more than promises.
I am a Conservative member and I voted for Kemi Badenoch. I felt it was time we had someone who wasn't a grey suited male as leader of the party and someone who, it appears, is keen to tell things as they are. As to whether Kemi will achieve that we have to wait and see but I'm willing to watch and listen. I heard her this morning with Laura Kuenssberg and she seemed to me to hold her own and I liked what I heard. We'll see. It'll be interesting to see how she copes in PMQs on Wednesday against Starmer.

As I see it at the moment Labour are digging themselves into a hole and giving all the other parties a great slogan for the next election - "Vote for us as we look after everyone, not just the working man"

Re: Current Affairs 2024
Perhaps it’s just my ignorance, but from my perspective I see the emergence of a different style within the Labour Party, one where they now appear to have a leader, but more importantly a chancellor who knows which way they want to take the country. They’ve been in power less than four months and all we hear is negativity, mainly from disgruntled conservative voters and a media who always like to create mayhem between the parties. Whilst I have said many times that I think our political system is broken, or at the very least needs a radical overhaul I do feel with this Labour party there is some hope for a brighter future as opposed to the blind alleys the Conservatives have been taking us.
The Labour party do however need to get on top of the immigration crisis, failure to do so will do irreversible damage to the party.

Different to what? Certainly different to the Conservatives but no different to the Labour of old.Onelife wrote: 03 Nov 2024, 11:40from my perspective I see the emergence of a different style within the Labour Party,
Whose popularity has dropped since the election from being 60% favourable to being 60% unfavourable.
Not sure that is the way the country wants to be taken
For the record I did not vote Conservative.Onelife wrote: 03 Nov 2024, 11:40all we hear is negativity, mainly from disgruntled conservative voters

Older people do have a propensity to hark back to the old days, whether good or bad.
As the finance industry says, past performance is no indication of future performance.
Reeves has gone all in and quite high risk.
Time will tell, but my instinct is that this government simply cannot be as incompetent as the previous bunch.

Different in the sence that the Labour party don’t as yet have as many disruptive tribes within its party…. this was the downfall of the Conservative party and the reason they became ineffective with their policies.

Mine! But you live with it hoping that things will get better.
….

I think the whole country was ready for a change in direction…you can’t effect change without the whingers.
…
For the record I did not vote Conservative.
Neither did I
…
Unfortunately I don't share your optimism.
That could well be justified but I prefer to be optimistic than carry on where the conservative left me.

Re: Current Affairs 2024
As much as I dislike the DPM Angela Rayner, she has come up with something I can agree with. That is a proposal, which, should it gain traction will not allow council tenants to buy new built council houses.
Council houses are badly needed for those who will never be in a position to get a foot in the private market. Eventually more council houses will be available to be recycled to people who really need them.
O K , so Angela did buy her council house, and in no way do I hold that against her. If you were a council tenant who had enough qualifying number of years to buy your house, and had the money, it was a no brainer. My brother and myself helped our Dad to buy his council house, although it went totally against my beliefs and still do.
