Assisted dying bill vote

Unread post by Onelife »

How do you feel about legalised assisted dying?

My view is that assisted dying would be a kindness rather than allowing someone to suffer endless days/months of discomfort... both for themselves and for their loved ones. I do however think that if there were enough palliative care centres the process of dying would be far less painful for all concerned. Unfurtunatly, I can’t see that there is ever going to be enough so I would be voting for it if I had that option.

Totally agree and have done for years.

That is where I have to disagree. It is not necessarily about pain but with some they just "want to go" and keeping them alive living unnecessarily for an additional six months is not something that they want.

Too much of this discussion is not about what the patient wants but what others want.

We all have our own views and I would not argue anyone else's viewpoint even if I disagreed with it.

I think there will be so many safeguards put in place, even if you want an assisted death it'll be difficult to get one.

Just add, I'm not against it, as long it's in the correct circumstances.

I wonder if any thought has been given to the doctors and nurses who will have to administer such injections.

I think it's been said that it will only be permissible if the patient themselves administer whatever drug is used. But I take your point. Staff are bound to be involved in the preparations. And what happens if the patient is paralysed, for example?

Overall I can see the argument for when a person is suffering or has zero quality of life. But the safeguards will be enormously important.

One would like to think that those involved in the process will have ongoing psychological, physical and emotional support. I would also like to think that those tasked to do this kind of work will see it as a vocation and not just a job…perhaps along the lines of how palliative doctors and nurses are trained?
