Some People Never Learn
Poor old Michel Barnier.
Exactly the same as he was with Brexit - the only way is my way. At least the French got the measure of him quicker than we did!
What goes around comes around.

For better or for worst we in this country should be pleased that we have a political party that can make decisions without them being scuppered by opposition parties…. Political impasses have been the downfall of many a government.

Sounds like the Country is in a mess, I'm sure the German government are watching closely.
Don't worry, be happy

They need a fair, decisive, charismatic, popular Prime Minister like what we have.

This is of course a matter of opinion but having watched the exchanges between Starmer and Badenoch at PMQ’s, Starmer does come across as having more of the qualities you mention compared to that of Badenock who comes across a little immature with her responses. imoMervyn and Trish wrote: 06 Dec 2024, 12:00They need a fair, decisive, charismatic, popular Prime Minister like what we have.

the feeling I get about starmer is that he is out of his depth in the job and changes his mind when anyone disagrees with him almost certainly the worst prime minister I can remember

I thought Kemi Badenoch came across with quiet, well thought out responses to Starmer at PMQs. I wonder if the job of PM is everything Starmer hoped it would be. If his first few months are anything to go by I wonder how long other MPs will start wondering if the Party would be better with another leader.

With the size of his majority, unfortunately it is unlikely he will face any pressure to resign until much closer to the next election. However I have yet to see any likely successor among his cabinet, in fact the best of the bunch has recently had to resign.CaroleF wrote: 06 Dec 2024, 17:40I thought Kemi Badenoch came across with quiet, well thought out responses to Starmer at PMQs. Anyway Starmer has said that there will not be any tax rises during this government, with caveat of there not being any unexpected events - in other words there will be tax rises because something that is already known will be declared as an exceptional event.
There is far too much spin coming from this government - all talk and when push comes to shove there will be little or no action because of whatever this week's excuse is.
No different to any other government.

I notice when questioned about his latest "reset" he referred to legal and "illegal" immigration. That's a term he'd previously dropped in favour of "irregular". Slip of the tongue or suddenly getting it?

How long before tax rises are announced despite what Starmer says? He hasn't taxed "the working man" but due to tax rises elsewhere the money he has in his pocket will be swallowed up by price rises. However I am pleased to see that the peanuts he saved by scrapping the winter fuel allowance has been sufficient to fund the rest of his initiatives and plug his £22billion gap in the country's finances.
I was taught to be cautious
