Flam Railway Norway

Unread post by Stephen »

Is it worth it?

Considering the two hour train trip next May, but it seems expensive to me.

I believe you can pay your own way - book online but that risks the ship not landing for some reason. I have not done it on a cruise but did it during InterRail (~50 years ago.) It is certainly impressive but my abiding memory is of three railway workers arriving at the upper station (at about 5:30 am) and putting a three wheel ‘cart’ - unpowered but with a manual brake, and setting off under gravity down the track. They were the staff for lower station. Don’t think H&S would allow that today.

You can always take a risk and purchase at the kiosk once you are there. I imagine the earlier trains will be pretty well booked up but you may have more luck on a later train. From what I have seen on t'internet it costs about £67 return which gives you something to compare it with (that was the summer fare, depends when you are going).
I was taught to be cautious

The cruise is in May Foxy, as per original thread.

£67pp return is about half what the cruise line want. I like to play safe and stick to the organised trips unless I'm really familiar with the area. But I'm reluctant to pay their prices for a two hour trip where I may well be standing for most of it because of lack of seating.

That's a bit rich, are you not guaranteed a seat, especially at that price.
Don't worry, be happy

We've done it on an organised trip and had no problem getting a seat. I'd say well worth it.
