Grand National 2025

Unread post by Onelife »

With the three-day Aintree meeting starting this Thursday... and me being away for a few days I thought it a good idea to give you all the info needed for Saturdays Grand National.

https://www.grandnational.org.uk/grand- ... unners.php

As for tips, one should look no further than our very own “Lindsey” who incredibly picked last years winner, and the winner of the Scottish Grand National…. What are you backing this year, Lindsey?

I’m sticking with the two I advised over a month ago so have backed ”Iroko” £5-win 8/1 and Monbeg Genius £10-win 33/1… there are however numerous possibilities, in what is a very competitive field. With this in mind I think punters should be looking at the top 6 in the betting for this year’s winner…. Sadly, unless there is a flood of money for “Monbeg Genius” that puts him out or the reckoning…but hey! It’s the National…

P.s They tackle the National fences for the first time on Thursday 4.05, I will be having a speculative £5 win on “Presentandcounting” will like the going, jumps well, good amateur jockey…on the downside it lacks recent good form…

Good luck and let’s hope Jockeys and horses come home safely in what is going to be a very fast run race due to the going.

I would have thought you would have had a bet this year especially as the “Miserable Old Sod” is running  :D

In it's day Presentandcounting used to be a good horse but I think that time has gone. Regarding his win in November, he only had 2 other horses in the race, so maybe not a really a challenge. For a place I prefer Joker de Mai ridden by it's owner. To be honest I'm looking forward to the race before at 3:30 where we have Constitution Hill, Lossiemouth, Brighterdaysahead & Wodhooh running.... last 2 trained by Gordon Elliot.
I'd love to see the young 5 year old Wodhooh winning this race but I won't be having any bets.

Regarding the National ....did you know you can get slightly better odds at William Hill ...Iroko 17/2 Monbeg Genius 40/1
I'm surprised you are not putting £5 e/way on Monbeg Genius. Yes you get more for a £10 win (£330) but if it comes 2nd/3rd or 4th you still end up with about £28 so you cover your expenses and if it wins you'll still make £198.

I'm looking at Beauport as my National outsider....can do the distance
I'm not sure that I am Maximus will be able to repeat last years win but you never can tell
Still looking at other possibilities but just can't seem to make up my mind

Hi Pompy, I wouldn’t put anyone off betting ew as it is the logical betting strategy for a return on your stake. I generally blow caution to the wind and go all in for a larger return, that’s not to say I don’t bet ew, indeed I have just put Thursday’s bets on having backed two, “Gaelic Warrior” £10 win 2.55 and “Presentandchanging” £4 win £1 ew 4.05 which for the latter will just about return my stake should it get placed. With bookies (in most cases) only giving you 1/5th of the odds for a place your selection would need to be 5/1 and above to get a return on your stake.

I think Beauport has a lot in its favour and should give you a good run for your money… in what is an ultra-competitive GN this year.

Right, must dash we are off to Aber for a couple of days.

Just by chance I was walking past a bookies and decided to pop in and make my bet on Beauport for the Grand National
Also I decided whilst there to have an extra bet for today............so for Aintree 2:20 I went mad and had a huge £2 e/way bet on Gibbs Island who apparently wears a hood for the first time....a bit of an outsider.
Still hoping Wodhooh wins in the 3:30 but I didn't bet .......
Constitution Hill and Lossiemouth will probably make the top two places but you never know.

Constitution Hill tripped up two fences from home in a leading position leaving the field open for Lossiemouth to win.
Clumsy clot!! Apparently it fell at Cheltenham as well.

That's correct and Wodhooh came 2nd......I was so convinced the big two would come 1st & 2nd I didn't bother to bet but if I had done a small e/way bet on Wodhooh, I'd have made a small profit. My choice in the earlier race, Gibbs Island didn't do that well only came 8th

However....good news.....if you're following Onelifes suggestions then you would have had a win today with "Gaelic Warrior"

Well done Onelife.....you must be happy with that win

Thought I'd mention a couple of the Aintree races for today....and give you a whiff of nostalgia remembering a song from the 70s

I'm not going to be having a bet but in the 13:45 Handstands will probably be favourite but a horse chosen by Onelife earlier last month is also running at 20/1 Changing Man which came 2nd at Cheltenham.
in the 15:30 only four horses run but surly it's got to be won by Jonbon who won last year
Finally we have the 2:20 race and if you liked a bit of punk or new wave from the 70s the you'll remember Wreckless Eric who had that well known song Whole Wide World

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cUFL8WSxTgY

So shove a few quid e/way on Wreckless Eric and who knows you might get lucky ;)

Hi Pompy, yes, I was particularly pleased with the way Galic Warrior ran, especially so as it has put two poor runs behind him.

I’m backing three today…not with a whole lot of confidence as all three have questions to answer.

Stellar Story £5 win 1.45…not sure it will go on the drying ground, but if it does then it has the class to win a race such as this.

Minilla Missile, £8-win £2 place…You may recall that I put this one up at Cheltenham (the one that was pulling the milk cart) finishing well down the field. Well, I’m not giving up on this one as I think it has more to offer and at odds of 33/1 could outrun its odds.

GA Law £5 win 4.5…Another which has lost its way this year but should enjoy this better going and another that might turn its form around.

I’m not backing anything tomorrow other than my national tips which I've already backed.

Hope one of us finds the winner.

Minella must have been pulling the same milk cart this race ;) made a bad mistake at the first and the milk cart nearly tipped over
Wreckless Eric was also pretty useless but I hope some of you enjoyed listening to his song from years ago.
your other hope...GA Law must have decided to borrow a milk cart as well  because he wasn't that good and was Pulled Up

After thinking about it I decided to have add a win bet for the National on I am Maximus ....
Just in case like Tiger Roll he wins for a second year running ...he is certainly good enough despite his poor showing in his last two races.

Also for fun a £1 e/way bet on Chantry House in the wishful hope he gets a place at odds of 100/1 with Coral & Ladbrokes which would give me a £19 profit I think. As I said I made a e/way bet on Beauport who is my main hope.

I thought Minalla ran a pretty decent race considering the way he clobbered the first...finished 10th. As for Ga law something clearly went amiss having only jumped three fences before being pulled up.

My wife has added one to the mix, she's got me to fork out a fiver on “Nicks Rocket”…I think we now have a third of the field covered between us Pompy

Interesting choice.....trainer preferred to send to the Grand National rather than the Gold Cup
Sky Sports gives him a 5 star rating.....
Great idea your wife has....you pay and if he wins she gets all the profit....perfect

I chose one yesterday - Jacob's Ladder. It ran out of steam and packed in half way round.
The good news is I hadn't put any money on it. It's probably pulling a milk float today.

Two bits of good news…Celebre D’ Allan and Broadway Boy both look like they will be returning home after what in Broadway Boy's case looked as if he had sustained a fatal fall. The Jockey riding Celebre D Allan received a 10 day ban due to him not pulling the horse up after the horse showed distress.

The other good news Foxy is that my wife took my advice :shifty: and backed the winner.

As for my two selections Iroko 4th and Monbeg Genius pu both struggled to go the pace on ground that didn’t suit.

Scottish Grand National next week  .

Pleased to hear good news about Celebre D'Allan and Broadway Boy. BB's fall did look nasty, especially since it did not move after the fall.

Yes’, fantastic news, I was reading that the stable staff stayed with him overnight and he is now on his way home…. I’m off to the bookies shortly hopping my wife looks favourably on me. I’m having a tenner on "Roysee" in the 1.50 flos las…it’s up against an odds-on chance so if things don’t pan out the way I hope they will…fingers crossed I’ll betting with my wife’s money. :D

Good news about Broadway Boy......but regarding Celebre D'Allan his jockey should have got more than just a ten day ban ( IMO ) terrible the way he forced the horse to keep going when he had no more to give.

You mention Scottish Grand National next week....seems like Monbeg Genius is running again & also Changing Man who you supported at Cheltenham...I think Changing Man has the better chance of the two but you will probably surprise us with a different horse. I think though that what your wife picks for the Scottish Grand National will have some support on here ;)

Let’s not get too carried away with my wife’s fluky bet in the National, although I am thankful for the £20, she has just handed me.

It’s a funny old game this betting lark…I’ve just taken 100/30 about Roysee only to see it is now trading at 5/1 in places…I fear this is one bet I wish I hadn’t placed, especially as the Fav has now shortened to 1/4 on.

I can’t see Monbeg or The Changing Man running unless a monsoon arrives…. if we do get rain then I can see no reason why Monbeg wouldn’t run… its not as if he over exerted himself in the National.

It was tough titties with your “I am Maximus” bet, which looked for all money that he was going to win. Looking back on the race I think the finish running rail came just in time for “Nicks Rocket” both from helping him go straight and probably kept him keep focused on the race.

With regard to riding of Celebre D’ Allan I think the jockey got caught up in the moment and rightfully got penalised for it….it probably didn’t help that there was prize money right down to tenth place.

Very unimpressive.....only the first two horses ran as if they were in a race
I thought Ben Jones was pretty useless on Roysee...and was much too late to make an attempt to catch up with the only two horses who actually ran as if they were in a race....and then he couldn't be bothered to jump the second to last, just blundered his way through it

That’s a pretty fair summary of the race…I’ve been following “Roysee” these past few months and whilst I agree with you regarding the ride Ben Jones gave the horse, I think he was probably riding to trainers’ instructions. The horse is prone to pull hard in its races and it was apparent that different tactics were applied in order to try and teach the horse to settle better. The question punters will be asking is whether or not the horse was running on its merits or just as I believe, having a schooling run?
