Re: Current Affairs 2025
We should be selecting who to swap with the French by the end of the week. Government spokesman.
Unless we also take another route, the number of boat people will remain the same, or, as will happen, the number will continue to rise.
To help, we throw another £10 million to border force. Maybe they can buy another boat to help ferry more to our shores.

Until we send them all back nothing will change.

Re: Current Affairs 2025
It must be possible to agree a deal with France to send all those illegally crossing the channel, because that would kill off all the smuggling gangs, as well as put an end to all the camps of migrants waiting for a boat.
However the French will want us to increase the number of legal asylum seekers we accept, which will undoubtedly be a major sticking point, not only to UK public opinion but also French government and public opinion.

From the outset any immigrants arriving by whatever means should have been sent packing back to France and only accepting those who arrived through official channels. An example of weak government.

We may have had weak govts. but in this case it's the human rights act and greedy lawyers that are more to blame for the slow/lack of action in deporting illegal immigrants.oldbluefox wrote: 05 Aug 2025, 20:25From the outset any immigrants arriving by whatever means should have been sent packing back to France and only accepting those who arrived through official channels. Re: Current Affairs 2025
We could follow the Australian approach…
"Australia's approach to illegal migration, particularly unauthorized boat arrivals, is characterized by a mandatory detention policy and offshore processing of asylum seekers. This approach, often referred to as "stopping the boats," involves turning back or intercepting boats, and transferring individuals to offshore processing centres"
Which in our case could be one of the unhabituated Scottish islands.

Question.
If we managed to return all illegals back to France.
What then does France do with them.?

The home secretary has said the first migrants could be sent back within weeks.
What's wrong with now. Just gives the do gooders time to mount a legal challenge.

Re: Current Affairs 2025
I can’t see what the gain is for the UK. We send one back, France send one to us.
Just send them all back and France can sort them out. Fat chance of that happening.

I wonder what will happen when there are no legal asylum seekers left to swap with illegals, which with the feet dragging approach our civil service adopts should be fairly soon.

Re: Current Affairs 2025
The numbers involved in the scheme are pathetic. What did they say, 50 a week? That's less than 10% of the number arriving.

Clearly they got Rachel from Accounts to work the numbers out on her Barbie calculator.

No doubt in collaboration with Diane Abbott.

Seriously though, we have had drug smugglers coming ashore. We had the police and coast guard and border force hiding in the dunes waiting for them to come ashore, this was a few years ago , but East Anglia coast line has lots of desolate areas for illegal activity.

Yes, but I can’t see it being implemented any time soon.

It does sound like Trump and Putin are trading bits of Ukraine as if they own it. Be nice to consult Volodymyr Zelensky who has different ideas to which Donny is not going to be pleased with.
As Zelensky has said, why should the aggressor be rewarded with chunks of his country.
