Don't worry. They show as being in your outbox until they are opened at the other end.
I've had one in my outbox for a few months now, as the recipient hasn't been on the site since I sent it!

When sending a PM you have to click on where it say "Select a member" and then choose who you want to send it from the list - multiple recipients are allowed.
Another way is to set up a list of "Friends" and then choose one from that list - it is quicker that way if you intend PMing someone a lot. The friends system on here does not work the same as on the "old" P&O forum - on here each member can create their own list and they are not reciprocated with the other member.

Just another little thing that you may not have come across yet, if you post and someone posts at the same time a message comes up to say and then asks if you still want to submit the post and you have to press submit again, I thought initially we had the ( P&O syndrome ) ie: missing posts
I now wait until I see the message .. posted successfully but I still get caught out occasionally
