The Worst Forum Ever?

Unread post by david63 »

No not this one but Cruise Critic.

I sometimes visit and post on CC and over the weekend there appeared to an over zealous degree of moderation - nothing new on CC but this was way over the top.

A well respected member of CC who posted, amongst other topics, some excellent cruise reports on the P&O forum started a topic about the forthcoming Ventura dry dock/refurbishment which mostly consists of new carpets throughout the ship - it was something of sarcastic tongue-in-cheek post. Although I did not see all of the posts in that topic there were, apparently, some derogatory posts aimed at the member who started the topic. The derogatory posts were, rightly in my opinion, removed by the moderators.

Because of the hostility against the CC member that member posted a topic saying that he was leaving CC (bit of over reaction but cannot necessarily blame him) to which there were posts from many other members supporting his decision and/or requesting him not to leave.

Later there was another post from another respected member questioning the censorship on CC (which is actually against the rules) and not unexpectedly this topic was removed, along with the Ventura topic and that of the member leaving.

Elsewhere on CC I also had a post removed for no apparent reason where I was querying why anyone would consider travelling half way around the world without travel insurance.

No explanation has been given as to why any of these posts have been removed, or what rules have been broken. To me this is a bizarre way of operating a forum and only results in alienating other members.

I know which member you're referring to David and I totally agree with you. If you follow that forum you get to know which members you can rely on for good advice about cruising matters and enjoy reading about their experience. I only read the Ventura topic that was there yesterday morning so I assume some postings may have been removed. It seems as if some people just wait, poised to leap on anyone who says something they don't like. I must admit I was surprised at one particular member who criticised the posting. I thought he was sensible but it appears he may not be. I thought the Ventura posting was amusing and what is more correct. I hope the member may reconsider but I don't think that's very likely from what he said. I don't very often post on CC but if I do it's purely factual and if anyone doesn't like what I've posted I ignore it. I suppose that's the danger of posting on any social media. By the way, I guessed the posting was from you, what made me look at it twice and check the name was your use of the word fora!

Perhaps they'll defect over to this forum. :D

Just looked and I hadn't realised you'd said they'd removed the member's posting completely, plus those people who said they were so sorry he felt he'd had to remove himself from CC. Definitely Big Brother!

Unfortunately I think it was my post that may have caused his withdrawal, I accept that his post was making fun of P&Os refit message, but I felt that it followed quite a lot of negative posts he had made about the current way P&O is being run. Which was why I suggested his recent posts had been a little bitter, which in hindsight I should have worded it differently. But I had thought that he and I had a more robust understanding of each other's points of view and I certainly did not expect his reaction.
However CCs reaction was typical of the way their forum is "policed", and to delete so many posts was totally over the top.

Towny, it wasn't you I was referring to when I mentioned I was surprised at one member commenting. It was someone who I think seems to have been a member for ever, from I believe further north than you are. Yes it seems that forum, when it senses any criticism, the immediate result is to get rid of it all. I suppose the member, who seems to have all sorts of problems at the moment, just got fed up. Maybe he'll return at some future date who knows.

I seen that topic on CC as well and didn't take much notice of the original topic about the refit as we all know it's usually over the top about a few new carpets
I also seen he was going to leave, I did send a reply mentioning how I used to like reading his live at sea blogs

CaroleF and towny I think I know who you are on CC :)
