Todays the day....and not everyone will be that bothered & they prefer to spend on other things rather than gamble
Like for a cruise....when they are happy to splash out...

To be honest....If it's not your thing then that's fine  ....just keep watching us trying to win and continue teasing us & when when we occasionally lose, telling us just how useless our choices are
At least with a small outlay I seem to have a slightly better chance than with that £2 I spend every Wed or Sat on a useless lottery ticket

Now a mention of a couple of big outsiders that some people think might have a chance
Beauport @50/1 came 12th in this last year....might do better who knows
Spanish Harlem @50/1 strong stayer over 3m

That sums it up pretty nicely Pompey, other than to say I’m putting together a hit squad for Ray and Foxy. :D

I think the bookies must think we are mugs looking at the prices on offer for the National…the first 6 in the betting being no bigger than 11/1…which isn't good value from a punter's perspective.

My wife, who had the winner last year, has gone for Panic Attack.

Good luck…but most of all lets hope both jockeys and horses come back safely… behind Iroko and Champ Kiely.

Grand National Result

The good news is that it looks like all horses will be returning home tonight...Robbie Dunn being assessed for a knock on the head.

1st (1) I Am Maximus 9/2 F
2nd (13) Iroko 18/1
3rd (28) Jordans 28/1
4th (33) Johnnywho 12/1

My two selections finished 2nd and 8th

Was Iroko unlucky? Not really but ran a great race…just needed a bit more rain.

Champ Kiely finished 8th…ran a cracker.

I decided to go to one of the high street betting shops to watch the race because I thought it would be great to watch everyone cheering their horse during the race and I was right as it was very entertaining especially when I am Maximus won and a few had put their money on him. One guy in particular was very vocal and screaming " I told you, I told you " started hugging everyone & was really funny & loud. Turns out he had bet £100 in that shop when the price was @8/1.....so won £800.
Jagwar got pulled up and Favori du Champdou could only make 6th ( but still 9 lengths ahead of Final Orders behind him )

Yeah all horses survived the National. But two have died in other races at the meeting. Would we support any sport that killed humans at this rate?

The individual sports bodies wouldn’t allow the kind of fatalities that horse racing endures so endeavour to make human sports as safe as possible. Most contact sports will require certain safeguards for the participant's safety e.g. helmets, protective clothing along with safety modifications to sports powered types of motor racing etc… I’m guessing without these regulations there would be far more human fatalities. I’m presuming that you are advocating for a complete ban of horse racing, especially in regard to NH racing? If this was implemented it would be catastrophic not only for jobs that would be lost but also for the horses that would have to be slaughtered due to the unviability of keeping racehorses without the income being generated through racehorse owners fees. Furthermore the exchequer would lose £millions generated through the racing industry.
I share your concerns for those horses that tragically lose their lives doing what they are bred to do, however, unlike human sports you can’t wrap horses up in cotton wool, or indeed protective clothing in order to make racing safer. Unfortunately there is little alternative other than to do as you wish and ban it completely.

Yes ‘it could be argued that racehorses don’t have a say in the matter, but as I have said on many occasions most horses rarely find themselves on a race track for more than a couple of hours of their life…. the other time is spent in the paddocks being cared for by people who are passionate about the sport they love.

If you keep this up Sir Merv I may have to disclose how Charlie and Cam were giving jobs to Cam’s sister without putting it out to tender….if I had my way I’d ban the lot of them  :D

My apologies to Mrs Onelife, but that was ment for Kieth. Up until it fell, it was nicely positioned just behind the front runners.

It seems to me that there are many sports that humans take part in that give fatalities
So should we ban any sport that has a risk of fatalities

Base Jumping often called the worlds most dangerous sport....an estimated 1 death in every 2,400 jumps.
Cave diving an estimated 8 deaths annually
High-speed racing, particularly on public roads like the Isle of Man TT, is exceptionally deadly. The Isle of Man TT has recorded over 260 fatalities since its inception.
Luge/Street Luge: Athletes lying on sleds reach speeds exceeding 90 mph with minimal protection, making collisions potentially fatal
What about Boxing and even rugby can cause serious injuries.....should we also ban these sports
Even cheerleading has lead to serious injuries and a few fatalities....don't you think we should ban it or make them wear safety helmets

I hope they never ban cheerleading as I love their skimpy outfits… I would even go as far as saying I would always make myself available should any of them get injured and need a quick “rub down” :D

The difference is humans make their own decisions to take part knowing the risks. Horses don't. I don't pretend to have an answer but I found the sight of that poor horse desperately trying to continue with no understanding of why it's back legs wouldn't work desperately distressing.

How do you go about backing one of those horses without a rider on? That Number 22 who came in first clearly did better without the jockey telling him what to do

Sir Merv, I watched the race in which “Gold Dancer” sustained his injury and yes it was distressing to watch… and the reason why I can understand your point of view.

In six days time, for anyone interested it's the Scottish Grand National at Ayr next Saturday
Johnnywho was 4th in the Grand National yesterday and might be in it or if you don't like betting on him Ask Brewster ;)

I guess some people want to bet a year ahead ( Not Me ) so you can get odds for next years National already
I am Maximus = 12/1
Iroko = 16/1
Jordans = 16/1
Panic Attack = 40/1
I won't go on , anyone interested can look up on google

Anyone who is contemplating taking those prices needs their heads examined…besides, don’t you think you’ve done enough damage this past weekend?
