Cheese Granny threatened by Plod

Unread post by qbman1 »

This old bird has been visited mob-handed by Plod and warned against supplying her cheeses for the traditional Gloucetershire cheese rolling event. Apparently, she has been doing so for 25 years:
Elf 'n Safety gone mad

Who, in their right mind thinks this is a good idea? If these lunatics want to tumble down the hill at their own risk, let them carry on but why get heavy-handed with the Cheese Granny? They can always go to Tesco for their cheeses anyway !

There is no mention anywhere in the article that this lady is a granny.

Cubie, you are assuming that this elderly cheese maker was blessed with children, who in turn were also blessed with their own children, thus making her a grandmother, or granny. This is a very big assumption and detracts from the horror of the actual story concerning the rights and wrongs of clearly deranged people throwing themselves headlong down a very steep hill in pursuit of a wheel of cheese that they themselves have thrown down the hill. I hope I've made myself clear.

My point exactly. Everyone is so used to this Health & Safety nonsense that no one actually cares any more about such ridiculous heavy-handed behaviour

The event takes place about 5minutes drive from where I live. They banned it last year and I thought it wasn't going to happen any more. Clearly, by public demand it is on again. There is usually a broken bone or two, and it is obviously a mad thing to do. Whether or not this lady makes the cheese, the event will take place. I am sure they can chase a piece of wood if cheese is forbidden!

What if they used cheese triangles??

However when I first heard this I thought it was connected with 'The Right Way', and Basilricky!

I suppose they would say that this sort of thing was a load of Food Athletics Flaming Fraught!!!! I can think of other acronyms a la Basilricky, but I'll behave!

Spare a thought for already hard-pressed Accident and Emergency Departments who'll take these folk when they hurt themselves .... it's bad enough to hurt oneself by accident, never mind doing something deliberately participating in a pastime during which there is every likelihood of injury.

...but it's no reason to stop someone from doing something "in case they hurt themselves". That's the nanny state gone mad. Anyway, it's no worse than the people who trot up to A&E or their GP week in, week out with the most trivial of ailments. That, and the large numbers of EC migrants who have paid nothing into the system are the biggest drains on resources.

I heard that if you roll down that hill while three sheets to the wind the chances of injury are minimal

... and that it's far safer than going into town on a Saturday night.

I would have thought that people would be a bit peed off if A&E was full of such people. Just my observations. Last year my vision went, I'd had a posterior vitreous detachment (look it up) I thought I was having a stroke, so did the doc, I was waiting for ages only to see first a footballer, then a cricketer, followed by a rugby player who were attended to before me, and they came in after me.

It sounds like the old pub story of the drunk on the piste ... if sober you ski down a slope hit a tree and break every bone .. however someone the worse for wear on alcohol would get up and walk away ... not found anybody willing to provide scientific proof of this yet though

I concede, that's unfortunate, but surely you don't want to stop all sport as well in case of injury ?

No qbman, of course not, but in my view there is a difference between playing footy, or cricket, than wantonly throwing yourself down a ruddy great hill.

Last year I went to A&E and was seen by a Doctor in less than 10 minutes jumping a queue a mile long ... I was bleeding from an open wound the others were not.

Vive la difference perhaps ?

People are very cautious about open wounds and flowing blood, I expect it's all to do with AIDS and HIV. Perhaps I should have bashed my head against the door frame then ?
