Selfridges robbery

Six men in burqas carry out a robbery, using their costumes to hide their weapons.

Firstly, IMHO, this is another reason why the burqa should be banned in this country.

Secondly, with a name like Connor Groake, I doubt very much if he, or any of the gang, are Muslims so is this crime also an attempt to bring the Islamic community into disrepute - in which case, can they also be done for racial/hate/discrimination offences?

Hoodies? Perhaps not in shops when the face is visible. But I think anything that conceals the face should be removed when entering a building - after all, no-one thinks twice about the requirement to remove a crash helmet. It's good manners, if nothing else.

She should have been told to take it off. I would be suspicious of anyone walking around wearing something that covered their face.

It's called "good manners", John. Banks, for example, require you to remove your helmet before entering. I have no problem removing mine, despite the considerable hassle of having to remove my glasses first.

I doubt this had anything to do with intentionaly trying to do something against muslims.

If you wander into any store, bank etc wearing a mask, balaclava, helmet etc there's a very good chance you'll be asked to remove it for security reasons as there's very little reason to be wearing them inside.

The one exception to this is the burqa and from the point of view of commiting a robbery it is excellent. It covers 90% of the face making indentification with it on near impossible and most stores etc would be very reluctant to ask a muslim female (you'd assume that is who is wearing it) to take it off for fear of the backlash for being insensitive to cultural blah blah blah.

All head coverings should be removed when entering a bank, shop or other business premises ... whether that be a crash helmet, cap, hoodie, burka, scarf or whatever ... it only takes a few seconds to put such things back in place.

Personally, and on a similar note, I believe all 'tribal' and other forms of symbolism are not really suitable for the working place .. that includes sports, religious, flags etc. The workplace should be neutral.

My local Tesco petrol station has a notice on the door saying that crash helmets MUST be removed before entering the shop area to pay.

Which, IMHO, is reason to ban it. I'm sure the staff at Selfridges felt that same reluctance. However, if burqas were disallowed, those jerks would, I dare say, have found it difficult to find another way of concealing their identities.
