Hi Helen,

It's such a shame that you just don't appear to have the knack!

That's very harsh Boris. I wish I hadn't mentioned your old caravan now :D

Nowt wrong with caravans, Em, (unless you're stuck behind one on a narrow road), we've had two and thoroughly enjoyed our holidays in them.

Caravans a pain in the proverbial.

They should be banned on the roads between the hours of 04:00 and 23:00.

They should also be road taxed.

Why do they have to travel in convoys?

Cant they find there own way to the caravan park they want???

Most considerate caravan owners keep to the speed limit and move as close to the kerb as is safe to do so to allow following traffic to overtake. If this is not possible, then they pull in at the first opportunity to allow the queue to pass. Granted, there are some inconsiderate caravan towers, who won't observe simple etiquette and who break the speed limit, increasing the possibility of a "snake" developing (that's when the towed unit starts to oscillate, and can result in the 'van flipping over and sometimes taking the tow vehicle with it).

Why should they be taxed? No other trailer is.

Caravans rarely travel in convoys. I've towed caravans for years and haven't yet been in a convoy.

I believe they should be taxed as they use the road and should pay for it.
So should cyclists over the age of 18.

I live in Derbyshire and I am very often stuck behind two or three of them in a 'convoy'.

I have never yet seen one pull in and let people pass.

Well, it would be another source of revenue. Can't say I'm bothered either way, as I no longer tow.

Agreed

Has it occurred to you that the second and subsequent outfits were travelling faster than the previous ones and cannot get passed the one in front? It's an unfortunate fact of life, but not one that is planned.

You really need to get out more often. You would then see that not all caravan owners are as inconsiderate as the ones you've unfortunately encountered. I agree it is very frustrating but not everyone, by a long way, drives like that.

We tow a caravan and have never held up anybody. Motor homes, however, are a different story. I have been stuck behind them for many a mile.

Yes of course, but that just shows how inconsiderate they are and quite often they are friends travelling together.
Oh and my daughters in laws have a caravan and mostly travel with friends who have one.

Also - you may find that it costs you to get out of the contract with the estate agent if they have a favourable offer on your property and you do not accept it.

Hi DK,

We have (completely by accident) found a cottage that we fancy - so it's fingers crossed etc. Just planning for the future and looking to have everything on one level.

Em :)

Hi Tinker,

If we get an acceptable offer there will be no refusal - but the EA is fully aware that there is only one property we are interested in, and he knows that if that is sold elsewhere we will revert to Plan B.

In the event that we need to cancel the contract I'm not worried about the fees - if I can't have what I want then I would much rather stay where I am, and the EA is very aware of that.

Em :)

To be fair John once off the main roads in Derbyshire there isn't much chance of passing anything, a good example being Holymoorside to Baslow and not a cat in hells chance on the road to Bakewell, my husbands the same he hates being stuck behind anything, me I'm quite happy to just tootle along and enjoy the scenery, it's a man thing

I seem to think there is a caravan site somewhere near Baslow so that particular route is always going to be busy with caravans.

How? They would be one of the only few vehicles on the road.

They could travel in as big a convoy as they wish :)

They travel about the same speed so it shouldn't increase the number of accidents, should lower it in fact, less slow traffic during the day.

The idea of taxing caravans is not original - that is what happens in New Zealand (although there are not many caravans as they tend to go more for camper vans). In NZ all trailers are taxed and registered independently of the vehicle that tows them, which if you think about it is a more sensible idea.

hate to point out the obvious, but wagons are limited to 56mph, so how do they overtake each other?
you would end up with a massive convoy on any A road and motorways blocked
as nobody could overtake
not the best idea really

We went to a campsite in the Bakewell area - can't remember the name of the place -didn't know until we got there that it was at the bottom of a very long, narrow, steep hill. Thank goodness we didn't meet another outfit travelling in the opposite direction, as there was only one passing place.

I'm not trying to belittle John's experience, as I have seen the occasion snarl-up due to 'vans, but it's not as widespread as perhaps made out.

It wouldnt affect motorways at all the amount of traffic on motorways overnight is aleays light.

I have had the misfotyune to drive on motorways overnight quite often.

Usually from Chesterfield to Maidstone.

Whay speeds are caravans rsstricted to? Is this 50 as well, if so then they would remain the same speed as the lorries anyway.

I believe the speed limit is now 60, but I could be wrong. Certainly I've seen many outfits going much faster than that.
