Centre of England

Unread post by jacksparrow »

For those of you that still thought the centre of England was near Coventry it has now been stated by ordinance survey to be in Fenny Drayton Leicestershire. Its in the middle of a crop field. ;)

Nah - that may be the centre of England but the centre of the UK is up here in good old Lancashire at Dunsop Bridge  - I know this for a fact because I have seen the telephone box

Speaking of geographical oddities.... did you know that Edinburgh is farther west than Bristol, and almost as far west as Cardiff? Amazed me...I had to check an atlas.

They go down very well after a couple of pints in the Hark to Bounty at Slaidburn and a bacon butty from the Riverbank Tea Rooms. Both villages (Slaidburn and Dunsop Bridge) are little-known off-the-beaten-track gems in Lancashire's crown.

The lack of road signs around the Bowland Forest means very few actually get in. The only cars you will see are those who are still looking for the way out. My lips are sealed. :shh: :silent: :silent:

This thread has developed a significant red rose bias. Everyone knows the centre of the UK was the centre spot of the old Leeds Road footie stadium, it even had a plaque on the B&Q car park to mark where it used to be, AND it has recently disappeared which could be another Lancastrian plot.

Google search comes up with Coton in the Elms in Derbyshire as being the furthest from the sea

It also suggests Lichfield is the Town furthest from the sea.

Perhaps we need someone who has studied geography to help us

It depends on what you define as 'the sea'. If you include tidal waters then you get a different answer.
