I love Scrabble but 2 things wind me up. Firstly, people who spend the whole game with their head in the book, obviously looking for ideas and that horrible little timer! Who can cope with that kind of pressure?

Shiny, it came with the rotating board edition. It's black and has a horrible red light that flashes when it goes off. I've called it some very unkind names

We have the Deluxe Rotating Board edition ... so there.

( Where's the thumb at nose with wiggly fingers icon ? )

... anyhowz, it hasn't got a timer so yours must be the ' Export ' version.

Keep smiling, it's good for your well being

If someone has their head in a book (I presume you mean a dictionary, or scrabble book) they are not playing by the rules. You can only check a word after it has been challenged. If the challenged work is incorrect, the player removes their word and misses their turn. If the word is correct, the challenger misses their next turn. No one should be searching words in a dictionary before they play.
Someone else mentioned quarrels about allowed words - the dictionary to be used should be agreed before the game.
(Sorry - this makes me sound really nerdy, but I grew up in a SERIOUS games playing family, where rules are strictly adhered to, and I have to confess we brought our family up in the same way!!)

Feel free to call me a saddo Ken

In fairness to my SIL, Angela, he only consults said Scrabble Dictionary after a challenge. However, some of the words he comes out with are frequently challenged, and they're all in his blasted book. :(

Going back to the original topic, I understood that the main grievance was that people have now lost the ability to choose their online gaming opponents - thus ripping out an established community of friends who previously played together?

My mother hates playing with my Aunt (her sister) who has learnt all the 2 and 3 letter words in the back of the scrabble dictionary! When I try it, I find I am making up words, but convince myself they exist
