You do ?

Now that is interesting cos when we sold the old pile to the developers a while back they advised that there would be three parking places allocated to each apartment.

Not sure it would suit you Moby unless you left your chicken shed and pigeon loft behind.

Reading this thread made me wonder what the difference is between a flat and an apartment and I found this: a flat is usually a room or number of rooms in a building that are occupied by the same dweller. An apartment is a self-contained shelter unit that occupies only part of a building.

Em, you had already said you wouldn't live in Windsor ... each to their own and that is your prerogative but if it's good enough for "her Majesty" I would have thought it was good enough for the rest of us mere "mortals" but there you go !!!!!

Hi Mo,

I think it's very much a case of 'a rose by any other name'. Given a clear choice between a house and a flat I personally would much prefer the independence and peace and quiet of a house. I personally feel that a flat can have many negative aspects - noise from above and below and also various sides; communal areas (external doorways, stairways etc) and shared areas externally - parking spaces and gardens etc.

Normally maintenance of the communal areas carries with it an annual charge - which can escalate out of all proportion and the maintenance may not always be to the satisfaction of all those who have to make the payments. It's a bit of a poisoned chalice really from my point of view.

We were looking into buying a couple of flats not so long ago, and after finding more than 30 points in the legal paperwork which I didn't like we walked away from the purchase with no regrets. However, we kept a watching brief over the flats in question, and recently discovered that quite a few of the points which caused us concerned have in fact caused substantial bother for the current owners. Lucky escape that!

Em :)

Hi Em, each to their own ! It would be strange for us all to want the same things. I genuinely didn't know the difference between a flat and an apartment and was interested to find out. It took me years to get a detached house, up to then I'd lived next door in a semi to noisy neighbours and thereafter a mad do-it-yourselfer, it was, and still is, wonderful not having anyone on a party wall.

Hi Jo,

I think that such a purchase is unwise and foolhardy. At the end of the day firstly it is essentially an old property - and old properties can be riddled with hidden problems. Yes, ok, I know that that is what surveyors are there for, but it's a game I wouldn't play - I don't go looking for trouble when I buy a property.

Then there is the issue of communal areas - another problem waiting to happen, and don't let's forget that with communal areas come handsome charges, management fees etc., and at the end of the day it is possible to purchase something else with less problems.

I personally don't spend money to gain problems, worry and unhappiness - I wish anyone spending money (whether their own money or a mortgage/loan) all the happiness which they perceive their purchase is going to bring. However, this particular property is personally one which I would stay well clear of.

Em

Hi Mo,

I know that a detached house is perhaps not for everyone, but I can't blame you one bit.

Em ;)

A few years ago I was in Windsor for a very short time whilst en route to Wimbledon, I thought it a lovely place. I always think apartments look super but living in one has never appealed to me. I couldn't live on a narrow boat on a canal either but some people adore it and wouldn't live any other way. Vive la difference ! The house we'd reserved, with a deposit was sold from under us by the developer because we hit a hitch with our sale so we ended up buying the last one on the development. The position is not ideal but I had to get away from the noisy neighbours. I'd love a spacious bungalow but it's not going to happen so I will have to be content where I am.

Now if I'd had the money, I would have built, or had built, a house/bungalow to my own design. My husband's brother in law did and that way you can incorporate all the things you want. Whenever I go to my favourite spa, I am always struck by the peace and quiet of the countryside. I live in an industrial part of Yorkshire and some of it ain't pretty! How lovely it must be to live in one of those little villages that we pass through en route.

Mo, pay the 'moron tax' like I do and buy a lottery ticket. I've always fancied an indoor pool and a room with a bar and a dart board would be nce. :D

H, I do but I couldn't win an argument let alone the lottery LOL. I'd love an exercise room, pool and hot tub, snooker table, tennis court, a playroom for my grandkids so that I wasn't tripping up over the toys ...... oh and a personal chef to whip me up a healthy plate of something at the appropriate time ...... :lolno:

You are entitled to your opinion Em I merely said I was surprised at it.

I must have misread something along the way as I thought a few weeks ago you mentioned buying a property and I assumed it was an old property as you said you were drawing up a list of things you would have to do ( this was a project 2/3 years away I think )

I doubt any of us spend money to gain problems, worry and unhappiness but in the real world these things do happen, one thing we can all be sure of is ... nothing will ever be 100% be it a house, a cruise, a car or whatever, that just happens to be the reality of life !!!!

Oh I forgot to say listed buildings are old but many live in them hmmmm I wonder what sort of problems they have :D

Our apartment in Windsor....is not our main home....Alex lives there mostly, I just visit and clean the place..
We have a big Victorian (old, but not listed) terraced house up north....our main home.
I love old buildings, love the feel of them, the detail, the whole thought of lots of families living there before us.

Yes they take a lot of time and maintenance...but so what...as has been said already nothing in life is perfect.
I would hate to be one of those where every detail just has to be perfect...
We have had two detached modern properties in our married life, but much prefer older houses.

Why are communal areas, problems waiting to happen?
We lived in a flat/apartment in Caswell for over 5 years and never had any problems at all.
Of course you have to pay maintenance fees...especially for something as special as this
Believe me Em, there is NOTHING unwise or foolhardy about living in this building.
I
But each to their own I guess...
Not everyone appreciates the heritage our country has given us.
