Have you ever done something really stupid?
Last weekend .... It had been a long day, an early start to get Julie to a hospital appointment requiring a 250+ mile round trip .... sitting about most of the day waiting for the wheels of medical bureaucracy to turn ... long tiring drive home with Julie obviously in a significant amount of pain ... quick stop off to fill up with petrol and buy a pint of milk ... back into the house and get Julie settled ... let the dogs out the back to kill more of my lawn ... throw my keys, phone, wallet etc. into the usual place and go in to sit down and relax in front of the TV. Seems normal?
Then it struck me ... I drive a @#£$% diesel car ... which now has half a tank of @#£$% petrol in it.
So what do you do? Well I hadn't a clue .. had to start phoning around and finally got some pointers. I called a local company to pick up the car and drain the system. Fortunately they still had a lorry on the road so at 11PM they picked up the car.
Had it ready for me the next day ... total cost ... £145 for pick up and drain, £95 to refill car with diesel, and not forgetting the £50 of petrol I had put in it and had now been drained .. best part of £300.
I then spent the early part of last week trying to figure out a way of blaming it all on Julie but so far have drawn a blank ... any helpful suggestions gratefully received.

Didn't Julie choose that car for you? If she's going to pick you a diesel car, the least she could do is wind down her window and shout 'don't go putting petrol in instead of diesel you plonker' every time you fill up. Tell her off, confiscate the Doug Hyde waltxer and send it to me and I'm sure she'll learn her lesson.

Just fess up, she probably knows you better than you think. Your mind was understandably distracted by your concern for her well-being. Either that or you're getting old
You will realise this when you walk into a room and can't remember why you went there. And it's the smallest room in the house.

Sorry to hear that, Ken, I can well imagine the sinking feeling you had.
I do hope Julie is feeling better today.

I almost did that once. Fortunately I noticed after I had only put a couple of litres in. So by then brim filling it with diesel, I could dilute it enough for it not to be a problem. No idea why I picked up the petrol hose - I had been driving a diesel for about 4 years at the time.
Mind you, I do know of one person who filled his BMW motorbike with diesel. In that case the drain used was my car's fuel tank. It's an ill wind.................

Recently a wire on the power cable on my sat nav came away from the plug. I can solder that back myself I said, rather than pay £20 for a new cable.
Bought a soldering iron etc for about £15 - here we go....
Plugged it all in - didn't work. Unplugged it, still didn't work, connected it to the wall socket, deader than a dead parrot in a Monty Python sketch.
So, have now had to get the sat nav repaired as well as still buy a new cable.
Captainesse Black has been told to remind me not to solder anything ever again.

BTW - There's a soldering iron for sale on e-bay, only been used once.

Re: Have you ever done something really stupid?
That's always dangerous!!
One Sunday morning last August I had been down to feed the cats, and make a cuppa, and I was going back up the stairs with 2 mugs of tea, when one of the cats came through from the lounge and miaowed in the tone suggestive of his having brought us a present (as in mouse, bird etc). I turned round, and my left foot slipped off the step. My main concern was then not to throw a pint of tea over the wall and carpet, so I concentrated on not spilling them rather than grabbing the handrail, and unfortunately landed with my right foot underneath me, resulting in a trimalleolar fracture of my ankle.
My falling spooked the cat, and he legged it. If he had brought us anything, he took it back out with him.
I did save most of the tea though, and was much in need of it after what had just happened.
We also had to cancel our cruise on Oriana, which sailed a fortnight later.
P.S. If you ever need to attend A&E, 7.30 on a Sunday morning is the time to do it. The place was empty, and I was seen straight away.

Re: Have you ever done something really stupid?
I did an almost identical thing a many years ago. Christmas Day morning, I lived alone but for my 3 month old dog, and I was walking down the stairs in my best togs to go to church & then to my parents for Christmas dinner. My dog got under my feet at the top of the stairs & I tumbled down to the bottom. I was so intent on not banging my head & knocking myself out that I landed awkwardly & broke my elbow. I had to call my brother to take me to A & E, which is also empty on Christmas Day lunchtime! The embarrassing thing was that the A & E doctor was also our Police Surgeon & he recognised me straight away (I worked at the nearby Police Station). He greeted me with 'Drunk again then Angela'!Not so ancient mariner wrote:That's always dangerous!!

Re: Have you ever done something really stupid?
I went to London a couple of years ago to watch the Community Shield at Wembley. We arrived the day before, and after checking in and depositing our luggage we descended the main staircase of the hotel to go to the London Eye. I overstepped the last step and crumpled into an ungainly heap. I tore the ligaments in my foot. I wouldn't mind but there was a notice at the bottom of the stairs saying 'beware the bottom step'. It was one of those staircases which widen out at the bottom. Fool ! I was too busy looking at a jewellery display case.

Re: Have you ever done something really stupid?
The bottom step was shallower than the rest and I just overstepped the edge. Turned my ankle right over. I'd gone over on my ankle as a teenager so it is a weak spot. Whilst I was at work I turned it right over on an uneven part of the car park and actually pulled a bit of bone away. So I was doubly annoyed that I'd managed to turn it over again. When I was in London I did the wrong thing and got a support which is not advised since it restricts the flow of blood. I hobbled to the match and hobbled everywhere I had to be but it did hurt. It still gives me gip occasionally.

Re: Have you ever done something really stupid?
I’ve lost count of all the stupid things I’ve done... but just for starters...
I once grabbed an electrified fence to see if it was live...It was.
I ran my finger along the blade of a knife to see if it was sharp...It was.
I once set fire to a pile of grass which resulted in four acres of grass land being destroyed
I once grabbed a pane of glass which was sliding off a roof... I ended up in stitches.
I drove 120miles to fit a new showerhead to our caravan shower... but forgot to take the showerhead.
Regards
OL

What you need to do is get a pad and pen and write down all the disasters you've had and before you do anything in the future, use it as a checklistOnelife wrote:Mo

A former colleague told me of a night when she couldn't sleep for the heat and took her nightie off, throwing it in the corner of the room. Her husband was getting up early to go to a bikers rally, but got dressed in the dark to save disturbing her. You can see where I'm going with this, can't you?
