Where do you post

Unread post by Dancing Queen »

Have noticed whilst this is mainly a cruising forum, the posts on non cruising forum (30,158) far out weigh those on cruise related forum (12,117), although the number of topics, in each section are roughly the same.

Some posters never contribute to cruise related topics, preferring it would appear the non cruising ones, and some then only the contentious topics, others only contribute on cruise related threads.

Where do you post.
Do you contribute in all sections of the forum.
Do you like the contentious posts, would the forum be dull without them, or do you disagree, and think they appear childish.
Would you continue to contribute, even if you had no future cruising plans.

I probably don't contribute as much to cruising related threads as I once did due to the fact that I have "jumped" ship and now mainly cruise with Cunard and this forum is mainly P&O.

It is nice to get an insight into other cruise lines though and I have found the recent River Cruise threads very interesting particularly as it is something we are looking to do.

I post on the non-cruising section. I have cruised, 3 times on Arcadia, once on Oceana, once on Artemis, on two Carnival ships and one Royal Caribbean ship. My memory is quite poor and I can't remember much about them. In any case, I feel that my experiences are now a bit dated, so anything I post will probably be out of date. Regarding contentious threads, I believe that people love these, they like to see people sparring, and these threads certainly get the most views. The forum would be dull without them, but they can get pretty horrible but good robust debate is OK. I have no cruising plans at the moment but I want to continue to join in here even so.

Personally, my meagre postings are overwhelmingly cruise-related. I have occasionally been 'suckered in' to posting in what appear to be general topics on which I feel I can offer assistance ... only to find it is a joke thread from which some gain amusement. I can never see the point of that - but each to their own.

Again personally, I don't feel a specialist forum, such as this, is the best place for discussions on contentious current affairs etc issues. It is too small for one thing but mostly I think it's to everyone's advantage to 'keep it cordial' if everyone is to gain from cruise knowledge and advice

I have no problem with word games etc. Not my taste but it's better than talking to the wallpaper, I'm sure

I don't think anyone's posts are meagre sunseeker, I think we all have something to offer whatever section we post in, you are not alone I'm sure we have all responded at some time to offer assistance then realised it is a joke, I always like a few to post before me so I don't appear totally silly if I haven't got the gist :o

The nice thing is though that even contentious threads are not allowed to get out of hand so ten out of ten to all the "mods" they are doing a wonderful job.

Well thank you DQ, for your confidence-boost response.

Actually I wasn't being self-deprecating; I meant meagre in terms of numbers - quantity not quality, as it were.

So, as I'm not a great non-cruise-related poster, my offerings will continue to be meagre, in numerical terms :)

I dont post an awful lot, although I read everything(well almost..)
I havnt cruised recently, had a couple of cancelled cruises.
But really hope to be crusing again next year !!!
I dont contribute to the cruising side now, as any info or opnions I have/had about ongoing stuff is out of date.
I did contribute a bit about the suites on Oceana as thats what we had, but general things I tended to leave to the more experienced cruisers.

I like the general chat side as I think its important to realise we all have ordinary lives away from the love of cruising and the community on here is good.

I very rarely post on this forum .. I occasionally lurk .. but on the rare occasions that I do post it is always in the 'Asia' section to give all and sundry access to my boundless knowledge on this continent which I hope someday I might actually visit :)

However this post may inspire me to maybe dip a toe in the water of some of the other sections :)

I am not a frequent poster but am a frequent reader. I mostly post on General Chat and Games. I do have a topic on Meeting Place Aurora but don't have many takers for R315 in September.

I thoroughly enjoy the General Chat section, as it is (to me) very interesting to learn other people's views on various subjects.

I often look at the Cruise Specific Discussion and sometimes post there from my limited knowledge, and sometimes at the Oceana section, having been on her five times, but it's mainly perused to glean further information (for example, about the climate in Hong Kong, which I found very helpful). When we eventually book another cruise (probably not until 2015 now), I'll be working my way through topics relevant to that ship.

As has been said, robust adult debates can be very good and I have more confidence in David and his team of moderators to deal with those who get out of hand, than I did in the P&O moderators who seemed happy to allow the more immature forum members to indulge in puerile name-calling.

I look on this site every day, sometimes 2 or 3 times a day ( I need to get a life!) but I only post occasionally and it is only in response to questions which really interest me whether that is Cruise Specific or General Chat. I dislike it when things get too contentious and sometimes feel like posting GROW UP! when some posts get out of hand but by that stage the moderators have usually stepped in and I think they are pretty fair and do a good job. I like reading people's cruise reports and wish I was better at keeping notes on what we have seen and done and what we thought of the ship etc so that I could do a useful review but we tend to be wanderers and drift around so would be hopeless at giving good information on what to see and how to get there.

D Q, You have been very observant . If you were to take away the games section the figures would possibly be a lot closer

We know that David set up this group until the P&O site returned. We also know that the P&O forum was probably not going to re appear. I have always considered it to be David's forum for P&O lovers.

Personally I love the site as it is, with all the cruising information available. It isn't just new comers that ask for advice but very seasoned cruisers have asked questions relating to places they haven't visited or ships that they haven't tried before.

You learn something new everyday from reading the cruise topics. Medical reasons have put a halt on us searching for our next cruise but those topics will help us in our search.

The general chat is what we are about in our day to day lives. It is fun and witty. Sometimes subjects hit a raw nerve but the mods do keep a very fair eye on these threads.

I love reading everyone's report on all cruise ships and all destinations. This is not advertising other cruise companies it is sharing their holiday experience with all of us.

Going back to the general chat where else could you get friendly advice on what is good in coffee machines, floor cleaners , wine offers, days out etc etc.

I agree with you Andrea, I love the site as it is, this thread is just to ask what others do, like you I learn something new every day and I think we have a good mix of both cruising and non cruising related topics.

Sunseeker, my apologies I think I could have worded my reply to you better, if I offended you it wasn't intentional.

I agree with all that DQ has said. She goes on to say that the forum is mainly P&O. I think the general impression is that it's a P&O forum but I tend to think that is only the case because most of our members have come from the old P&O forum and post their impressions of P&O. However I think it's good when we get reviews and comments about other cruise lines as it's always handy to hear what others are doing - not in a 'P&O are lousy, you want to sail with Albatross Seaways' manner but something much more constructive.
Essentially the forum can only be what its members make it. I would like to see more advice being asked from some of those who have yet to post or who post rarely. There's a wealth of information to be had but it needs forum members to pose the questions. In many ways the forum is still in its infancy but its nice to hear some of the positive comments some of you have made. Thank you.

I always go to 'view active topics' so I don't just stick to one part of the board, I just look at and reply to what I find interesting.

If there's any contentious threads on a subject that I'm interested in I might read along for a while, but if it goes on for too long, the debate tends to go round in circles, so I retreat at that point.

From time to time I might participate in a word game, but not often

Generally, I think there is a good 'atmosphere' on this board.

I look in most days and read most of the topics and don't post that often as normally some one has already stated my thoughts.
I will never get involved in religious or political posts as there will never be a right or wrong.
There are some witty and knowledgable people on this site and I wish there was something similar when we first cruised although I guess you do learn from your mistakes.

I rarely post on Topics regarding children, disabilities, weddings, solos and many aspects within each of the ships but I do enjoy participating in Cruise Specific and the individual ships plus General Chat ... but most of all on the Destination Forums as that is my main interest and experience base.

I also enjoy reading and indeed writing Cruise Reports be they Sea or River related and regardless of the Operator.

Is that 2 for the price of 1, MOB, or BOGOF?

Don't worry, it's just Mob repeating himself. When you mentioned MOB or BOGOF I thought we'd got a new moderator!!

I post a little on both. I don’t tend to give much advice regarding cruising, because I think there are people on here who probably have much more experience than me. I became involved in a few contentious threads on the old forum and lived to regret it. I won’t be going there again. I enjoy reading people’s cruise reports. I thought about doing a World cruise report but didn’t make any notes on the cruise because I was unaware of the existence of this forum until I came back and I don’t think I could do it justice now. Also I remember the World cruise thread on the old forum and I was sure someone else was going to write a report. Unfortunately no-one has.

When I log in I generally click on the new posts button to see what's afoot and post when something catches my eye. Sometimes it's nothing at all. Sometimes I get caught up in a lively conversation with someone who has a different viewpoint (and is clearly therefore wrong! :sarcasm: ). I often don't even notice which section the thread I'm responding to lives in.

I mostly hide away with the other eejits on LOTP, it seems to be the only place I don't get deleted or red penned! I like reading the cruise reports and am in cruise specific asking stupid questions for months before if I'm actually going on a cruise. I get very upset reading the contentious posts as I am a very sensitive soul but I do confess that I sometimes find myself wanting to post SYRUP ALERT! when things get too nicey nicey.
