computer glitch - but seem to have sorted it

Unread post by CaroleF »

There I was innocently reading through the new posts when my laptop decided to close itself down the and dreaded words - Configuring Windows Update - appeared on the screen. After it had taken about 3 or 4 minutes it closed down and then started again and took me back to the page I was reading. So first question - can I do anything to make Windows give me an option when I want to have updates configured instead of interrupting me when I'm in the middle of something? Then when I tried to leave the page I was on and go somewhere else a notice saying the page was unavailable, couldn't connect me or something like that. So I came out of the internet altogether, closed the laptop down and restarted. This time I went to Google Chrome instead of IE which I usually use. No good, same notice.

So without much hope I went to Windows Help and typed in - Problems connecting with internet after Windows Update. Various things came up asking me to click here and there - did all this. Then had a page that said Collecting Files - and warned me that it could take several minutes. It did take quite a lot of minutes. Eventually a page came up saying that I should attempt opening the page I originally wanted. So I then tried connecting via IE and it worked! I was amazed - the first time I've ever known a Help page to be of use. Anyone any idea what this was all about - just curious!

I am guessing that you have Windows 8 installed and that you hibernate your laptop as opposed to powering it down. If that is the case then it is a question of Windows performing its automatic updates. When it does this, and you do not power it off, there is a message in the bottom right hand corner, when you swipe the panel in, that says "Your computer will restart in ..."

Carole, the answer would very much depend on the version of windows you have

What is possible is that when your PC rebooted it lost its session and possibly something you were trying to do was 'session' related.
I have seen this and generally I use the sledgehammer approach by clearing cookies, caches etc. and then shutting down and restarting the browser

I'm not on '8', but on '7' there is an option for how I'm informed about updates. I'm sure someone will be able to tell you if there's similar on '8' and where it is
