and of his excellent advice when travelling "if you see a clean toilet...use it!".

Unfortunately his other good bit of advice is a little more expensive to follow ..... "always try and turn left when boarding an aircraft!"

Sadly the end of an era. His programmes were fascinating. He had a memorable voice and a memorable way of reporting.
Correct me if I am wrong but I believe he was born in Cleveleys, Lancashire.

His travel programmes were fantastic as far as we were concerned as indeed was the Monty Python sketch that depicted him so accurately.

I remember his travel shows .. must have been one of the first to bring far off exotic places into everybody's living room.
Maybe he played a part in giving me my sense of adventure and desire to see many corners of this world.
RIP.
