Good Samaritans

Unread post by The Tinker »

How reassuring to know there are good people left in this world. My husband was kneeling down on the grass verge outside our garden reading the water meter when a car appeared from nowhere and the man
leaped out saying 'are you ok? do you need any help? He thought my OH had collapsed.
Needless to say my OH felt a bit stupid but hey how many people would go out of their way today to help someone in the street?

It's nice to know there are still caring people around Tinks, when my husband slipped and broke his ankle 18 months ago there were several people that approached him and asked if he was ok, did he need an ambulance, as it happened he had already phoned me and I was on my way but it was nice to know that people did care.

In contrast, I nearly collapsed on the bus a couple of years back and had to get off and phone for an ambulance. Although I was slumped against a wall next to the bus stop during the rush hour, not a single person even looked at me.

Someone tried to steal my wife's handbag in town and 2 of the scruffiest people she had ever seen stopped him.
One helped my wife and the other chased the guy but he was too quick for him.

That is really sad Alan but unfortunately it is the world we live in ( most of the time ) not the same thing, but on my way back from York earlier this week I got on the train and had a few carriages to pass through to get to my reserved seat, I was stopped in my tracks by a young man in a wheelchair who was having a few problems positioning his wheelchair in the disabled area, I was more than happy to take a few steps back so he didn't feel under any sort of pressure in fact I even joked with him that his reversing skills were almost as bad as mine but what really amazed me were the ignorant people that couldn't get past me and were moaning, what on earth is wrong with people that can't show a little compassion for those that need a little help.

That is awful John but lovely that two people went to help you wife, it isn't really what you expect to happen in a small market town like ours but unfortunately we are not immune to the hard/desperate circumstances some find themselves in :( not that it excuses what they do

Walking to the local shops I came across an elderly lady collapsed on on the pavement. She was outside a large GP's practice so I dashed in and asked them to send a nurse or doctor out to assist. I was told firmly by two receptionists to ring for an ambulance. No one from the practice came to assist and eventually an ambulance arrived and she was taken to hospital.
I was shocked and angry and later referred this to the PCT and wrote a letter of complaint to the surgery.
This opened up a can of worms and I was assured that action has been taken and lessons learned.
it transpired that the lady was a patient at the surgery and had just had an appointment with a GP.

In a similar vein.

Quite a few years ago when we were actually going on our first ever cruise which was out of Miami we had some time to kill so went for a meander around the area where the hotel was. Perhaps, with hindsight, we were a little naive but after a short while a young man of Afro extraction came up behind my wife and snatched her bag. Two local lads gave chase and returned with said bag intact - we never did ask what happened to the thief!

That is the main thing that your wife wasn't hurt, not a nice experience though.

David a friend of mine got threatened with a gun in Miami in an argument over who was getting in the taxi that had arrived.

Needless to say he got the next one :)

A few years ago my OH collapsed in the buffet restaurant whilst on a cruise. I've been very accustomed to dealing with all manner of accidents and incidents but being your own wife it was very different for me. I was amazed by the number of people who came to my assistance (and regrettably I never found out who they were in order to thank them, even though I did try to find out).
The medics came, wheeled her away and 'commissioned' the lift. In contrast to the incredible kindness of other passengers who went out of their way to help in the restaurant you should have heard the grumbles from those in the lift who had to get out.
Thankfully it was nothing serious. She had been a bit under the weather and had fainted, although it was an experience I hope never to go through again. Within a short space of time I saw the two sides of humanity.

John, I'm pleased to hear your wife was not hurt but nevertheless still an upsetting experience.
I was taught to be cautious

A bit like my experience on the train Foxy, I wouldn't know what was wrong with the young man other than it wasn't temporary, he couldn't speak but there was nothing wrong with his hearing and he had a wonderful smile, I even got a "thumbs up" as I passed him and a thank you from the friend he was with.

A little consideration can make the world a much nicer place.

Thank goodness for that, still very traumatic for her though. I hope she has got over it now.
