The Price of Petrol

Has anyone noticed how much petrol is these days?

There was a time not so long back when there was great fear and trepidation about petrol reaching £5 a gallon (that is 4.54609 litres in new money ). Today I realised that petrol is now just over £6 a gallon and not word has been said about it.

and the Americans complain about the cost of their dirt-cheap fuel....

The cost of petrol is something I don't really look at - we've got to have it anyway so not much point in looking at the cost.

Petrol has been over £6 a gallon for quite a while now (and diesel is usually about 18p per gallon more expensive). Given that America is expecting to cut back on QE over the next year or so then that means the price could go even higher .. the next big one is the £2 per litre.

Perhaps we simply accept it as being part of a general rising of costs and an impact somwhow related to the various austerity measures.

When I told some American relatives the cost of petrol in the UK, they said that the National Guard would be out dealing with riots if it were the same price in the US.

I remember when people were concerned with fuel prices rising and the fact that it could get as high as £1.00 a gallon.
It is a necessity for transport which is one of the reasons products have increased in price and like others we fill up our car to get out and about and pay whatever the current price.

People on here are from all over the country and this thread has made me wonder how prices may vary.

There are 4 major supermarkets close to where we live. Diesel is £1.39 at one and £1.79 at the other 3. In the town centre there is a petrol station selling at £1.99.

I still remember selling 3-star petrol at 3s 4d a gallon!

Never understand why and the need to add .9 on the sale price

i.e £138.9 to me is £139

Only yesterday, I said to my OH, "Have you noticed how there was a big deal about the fuel duty in the budget and the 3p rise was postponed? Since then the price has been put up by more that that by the fuel companies and no-one says anything!"

Diesel's just gone up to £1.40.9 up here. I'd like to buy one litre and see if I get for £1.40 or if I'm overcharged at £1.41.

If that is the price of petrol down your way then won't be seeing me any time soon (I think you meant 138.9p)

The adding .9p is a marketing ploy to make you believe that it is cheaper than it actually is

S S, It is a stupid practise, just as you used to see adverts 'It is only 99p'.

Our car is mostly used for short distances and every 2 weeks the OH will put in £50.00 worth of diesel. He has yet to pay the exact money , the fuel in the pipe always adds on a few pence extra.

I usually fill at ASDA (which uses .7 at the end) .. yesterday it was £1.357 per liter (diesel) or £1.317 (petrol).

What I want to know is why is it that when you try to put exactly £40 in the tank it manages to flick to £40.01 as you lift the nozzle out of the tank

One problem that is slowly starting to emerge is the reduced consumption of petrol as hybrid and electric cars gain popularity. We have just bought a hybrid car and are getting in the high 60's to the gallon (with a 1.8 litre engine) - not only that we do not pay road tax

This, I was once told, goes back to the days when the majority of people used that archaic instrument called cash to pay for goods.

Putting 99p on the end of the price meant that the sales person had to open the till to get the change (normally 1p) out which prevented them from @pocketing@ the money

While I have little faith that hybrids achieve a lot when it comes to overall environmental impact, they can save the owner quite a bit ... however so can a simple diesel. My new car is a Hyundai i40 which is a large estate, gets about 53mpg, costs £30 per annum to tax, saves over £100 per annum to insure, has a comprehensive 5 year warranty and a servicing package ... all of which amounts to an estimated annual savings of almost £700 over my previous car ... pity I had to pay for the damned thing though which depreciates).

It doesn't seem that long ago that diesel was considerably cheaper than petrol and we were all being encouraged to buy diesel-engined cars.....

Don't forget that a US gallon is 80% of an imperial gallon.

I have a Skoda 1.9 Diesel - I can get 53 mpg just doing my 12 miles to work and on a long run we have got nearly 60 mpg if we didn't go over 70 mph. It saves us a fortune on our old petrol car, even taking into account the higher price.

Asda use 0.7p rather than 0.9p because they no longer give points on fuel prices, which Morrison's still do. These points are worth 0.2p per litre off the price, so it's a price matching mechanism.

Iused to have my private fuel paid for by the company and it saved a bit of time and effort when claiming expenses, but then it got to the point that it was cheaper to pay for private fuel than to pay the tax. It could be an advantage if you do a lot of private miles.

BTW I hope you and yours are settling in to your new home and enjoying the area.
