Afternoon Tea .....

I think that a group experience is not comparable to one that you do yourself. At Raffles we just participated in the obligatory Singapore Sling and a light lunch, DIY, but in HK at the Peninsula we also did DIY and had a great experience.

Anyway, recent birthday gifts have provided me with 2 very different days out; afternoon tea at a very well known hotel and a 4x4 driving experience!!! Obviously I won't book both on the same day

emjay - sorry you had such a bad experience at Raffles. Must admit it was a few years ago when I went but it was a very leisurely tea - only the one sitting. It wasn't a group visit, perhaps that makes a difference. No doubt it is much more commercial these days and the experience I had has long gone.

I didn't realise yours was not an excursion with P&O. I’m sure you’re right that was probably why our experience was so different. We live and learn.

We had a delicious tea at the Middlethorpe Hotel in York and again a gorgeous one at the Cedar Court Hotel and Spa in York,

What made it so much more enjoyable was they made the sandwiches for me without butter, I hate the stuff on bread but weirdly enough not on toast, crumpets or tea cakes,

I have had lunch at Raffles , when my OH worked in Singapore , so not as part of a cruise,,,,it was amazing,,,Also had buffet lunch at the Compass Rose restaurant at the Western Stamford....again absolutely fab,,,,and in both places the service was top drawer

We also had a lovely time at lunch at Raffles. We were on a cruise, but did a DIY trip there. Loved their Singapore Slings in the Long Bar, so much nicer than those served on board.

Gill it was so crowded at Raffles on the day we were there, I doubt anyone would have been able to have a peaceful lunch. If anyone did I stand corrected. I did feel a little better after a Singapore Sling in the Long Bar
I asked one of the waiters in the Crows Nest why the Singapore Sling on the ship was not the same, and he told me Raffles was a secret recipe. I don't know if that's true and you're right it bears no resemblance to the SS in Raffles.

I had 2 Singapore slings at Raffles, in the bar where evryone throws the monkey nut shells on the floor. It was great, and even better as I called my brother to tell him where I was and he'd just come in from scraping the snow off his car ready for work

Gill W - I so agree with you about tea on the Spirit of Chartwell (the boat they converted for the Queen to be on last year on the Thames on that horrible wet day). I have never tasted so wonderful melt in the mouth scones - they were not very big and amazingly they had been cooked on board. It was a fantastic tea - in fact the whole day and night was great (we stayed overnight on board and had a splendid breakfast). I agree such a shame she was unable to stay on the Thames.
