I Was Ashamed
Today we were in our local Tesco and there was an announcement that there would be a two minute silence at 11:00 in memory of Lee Rigby.
So why at precisely 11:00 does this stupid woman decide that she has to pour all her loose change into the coin counting machine? Why do people have to carry on doing their shopping? This was two minutes of respect and no matter what your views this young lad did nothing to warrant what happened to him other than being in the wrong place at the wrong time.
There are times when I despair about others - and this was one of them

You wonder was it people being deliberately disrespectful ... or just people so wrapped up in their own little world that they are unaware of what is going on around them?
I remember one of those 2 minute silences a while back in work, just before it started I took a phone call from a very important client so all that could be heard during the silence was me talking to the customer ... I was embarrassed but, in this case, the customer had to come first.

I think it is just people so wrapped up in their own little world, there is no excuse I've been in supermarkets when this has happened and it is announced over the PA system so people are either stupid or just ignorant.

I usually think that this 2 minute silence lark gets a bit out of hand, and that it should really only apply to those whose lives end during a conflict involving our armed forces. That's just me, and I have probably got it wrong.
However, I have come to the conclusion that Lee Rigby did absolutely nothing wrong, other than he was identified as a member of our armed forces and was murdered because of that.
So, in this case I think that a silence is not out of place at all. I would however much much prefer it if the silence in this case had not been necessary, and that on this wonderful sunny day he could have been playing with his lovely little boy.
If a silence is being held, the least people can do is go along with it - and whether I think there should be a silence or not, if one is being held I will remain still and quiet.

Minutes silence in football stadia was a very difficult one, some were sure to cause a ruck-as
Now sensibly the silence has been replaced by a generous hand clap, an I believe it works well

Yet every rugby league match I have been to the crowd are very respectful when there is a minutes silence. If they can manage it why can't some football fans?gfwgfw wrote:Minutes silence in football stadia was a very difficult one, some were sure to cause a ruck-as

because they're not actually fans, but members of rent-a-mob who seek to cause disruption under the guise of anything?

There's an old adage that football is a gentleman's game played by hooligans, and rugby is a hooligan's game played by gentlemen.
It seems that if you substitute the word 'played' by 'watched', then (as a generalisation) it still holds true.

NSAM - The perception is wrong. I am a season ticket holder at Manchester United and am certainly NOT a hooligan, nor are the majority of the 75,000 people attending the game. I have seen silences impeccably observed at Old Trafford, but have heard opposing fans disrespect a minute's silence observing the date of the Munich Air Disaster but these morons only do it because they want to hurt the United fans. Goading and baiting is all they care about, but they are a very small minority of mindless people who have no manners or any sense of appropriateness.

I did say it was a generalisation.......and your points, though valid, do not address the question as to why that this 'mindless minority' (and I agree with your description) are by and large associated only with football, and not other sports.

I remember being in Sainsburys on Remberance Sunday,,the store announced 2 mins silence and a elderly couple continued shopping,,talking at the tops of their voices,,weaving in and out of stationary customers,,,They were of the age to know better, and got many dirty looks from other folks ...including me.

That's my experience, too. In Tesco, one which is frequented by ex-residents of HMP due to its location, Remembrance Sunday silence was observed by all the young people, whilst pensioners carried on with their shopping.

On a lighter note we were in Sainsbury's on Remembrance Day which was being observed impeccably. However there must be a recorded message on the self-serve tills which activates after a length of time if nobody is using them. The poor girl responsible for self serve was rushing around trying to silence them as they automatically boomed out their greetings messages. She looked totally embarrassed.
