Why the Germans really are good! e.g. Miele.

Unread post by Frank Manning »

I arrived back from my IAM driving lesson to be greeted by those words dreaded by all husbands, "The washing machine has packed up!!" :( :( I tried a few things, like cleaning out the filter, but it still had a message 'Call the engineer'. After some searching through what I loosely call my filing sysytem I found the Miele 10 year warranty, and phoned for assistance.

It would be an understatement to say that they were brilliant. A lady (Yes guys it was definitely female) took me through a procedure over the telephone, which cleared the problem completely. Typical of German quality and efficiency.

49 years and 10 months marriage, so I am not claiming any credit for this. because Sue, being a wife of identical long service, would not believe that I fixed it and would still demand the engineer to check what I had done.

I usually look at the price of Miele and think 'I can get 3 Hotpoints for that' :)
It is nice when things work out that way ... my contribution to DIY is that I use a big hammer for big jobs and a little hammer for more delicate jobs.

I never mention the war in front of Germans since I made a serious faux pas in a sales meeting in Frankfurt about 15 years ago. A clue to what I did, is in my German friend's reply...."Zat vas a funny little salute! Ver did you learn zat"?

That's women for you Frank.

Bye the way. What you thought was a talk through to fix the problem was in fact a scam. You've just brought a top of the range Audi on the never never :D

I have just had a new washing machine and considered a Miele. I decided on a direct drive LG. The first time I did a wash I didn't like the sound it was making so rang the helpline and described the noise asking if this was normal. The young man I spoke too went off to enquire, came back and said no it wasn't normal and he could arrange for an engineer to call out. He ended by thanking me for buying an LG machine and cheerily said 'Have a nice day'.
HAVE A NICE DAY!!!!. I've just bought a machine for £600 very probably a lemon. I've only done one wash and he thought I was going to have a nice day!!!!!
Next time I'm buying a Miele. :(

Bad luck Em, but it may yet turn out OK, after all he did say "Have a nice day". Sue had lost (for lost, read thrown away) the manual for ours, but Miele emailed us a new one within the hour, and this morning I am tasked with cleaning all the 'bits' which have not been touched in seven years; "Well I'm not strong enough to undo that bit".

Having had Hoover, Hotpoit, Indesit (god forbid) and AEG, we bought a Mele and they are fantastic! I agree about them talking you through problems over the telephone - wonderful. And their dishwashers are fabuous. I would NEVER consider anything else.

Reminds me of when my (sorry 'our') washing machine broke down - OH yes i can fix it - no he couldnt.
Engineer arrives (luckily still under guarantee) and turns it on and all the water shot up into his face. I had to keep a straight face when he announced 'I guess your husband has been fiddling with this' as I crossed my fingers and said 'definitely not'

We women are not as useless as some of you men seem to think :o

I used to be Office Manager for one of Hoover's Regional offices so could talk most people through any "user faults" I was actually thinking of going through one of the engineers 6 week training courses but then moved on to bigger and better things and as my OH was a Service Training Manager with Hoover I have my "own engineer" on call so have never had to worry about anything going wrong with any electrical appliance.

I think electronics equipment needs to be designed better ... when it goes wrong it is dead easy to take apart but needs the skills of a brain surgeon to put back together again ... it's a conspiracy against DIYers :)
