The e-cig does seem to be "a way-forward" but I can understand P&O's rule as regards indoor PUBLIC areas. Personally one can easily tell (aside from the absence of irritating smoke) that they are not real cigarettes as they look somewhat pastic and shiny looking.

However there are concerns about the manufacture and regulating of what goes in them. This is where the UK and the EU should establish some standards.

I am not convinced about the deliberate absorption of nicotene into the body, and consider these devices as being really for those wishing to give up cigarettes as an aid, alongside other nicotene products such as patches and gum, and only for use in the short term and to kick the habit.

Shoreside, I also get the concern about reinforcing of "smoking is acceptable" to youngsters, when it isn't, and that indoor public areas and certain outdoor areas where children and youth can be reasonably be expected to be present, e-cigarette use by adults should be prohibited.

A ban on the supply of them to U18s
Derek

Is this a cut and paste?
My memory is not as good as it used to be.

Dark Knight:

Why would use of an e-cigarette move you up the socio-economic ladder? With regards to smokers, they are drawn from all classes and walks of life but as the number of smokers continues to diminsh, the majority of smokers are drawn for the lower orders. The vast majority of "smoking events" remains smoking a cigarette or roll-up although I would concede that e-cigarette consumption is growing.

Hmm ... would you really want to absorb nicotene for no discernable benefit, unless already addicted?

DN

I would seriously suggest that using an e-cigg is far less intrusive on the population than the consumption of alcohol. I can't see any reasons why the use of them should be limited in any way. They don't cause people to become loud, boorish or agressive.

Do you have an age in mind when it is acceptable for someone to use an e-cig?

18, 16, 14, 12, 5 or as soon as the mite can work out how to start one?

It's taken us long enough to realise the dangers of cigarettes, do we really know for certain that there are no dangers associated with e-cigarettes?

there have been a lot of university studies done, that show, that up to now there have been none of the issues associated with Tobacco and the many many other substances in a cigarette whilst using e cigarettes
I seem to remember there being over 400 different substances in or approved for use in cigarettes

Mr Kane's point is well taken, that you do not stop the addiction but it does stop the chance of developing cancer and other smoking related diseases as the carcinogens are not present in the medical grade nicotine used for e cigs

so my question is this, is a person using a e cig, smoking or just getting their fix, in the same way as drinkers do? :?: :?:

The person using an e-fag is doing so to suppress a craving but to achieve the same result with a drinker you would need to hide his/her cork screw ?
Keep smiling, it's good for your well being

For that you'd need an e-swig.

Goodness me Derek
I wouldn't let children or advise anyone to go near anything containing nicotine. Thankfully neither of my sons or my 4 grandchildren have anything to do with the dreadful weed. It has cost me tens of thousands of pounds over the years.

osmosis
the smoke is absorbed through the lungs into the oxygen in your blood stream and onto the brain in about 15-20 seconds, hence the rush

From the smoke, you say. I'd call that smoking the nicotine, but what do I care?

nicotine is about 0.6 to 3% of the weight of tobacco
it is not the nicotine, that does the damage but the rest of the stuff in a ciggie, nicotine in fags is 1 milligram or there abouts

There's enough nicotine in a cigar to kill two men.

Just found out the other day, there is a non-nicotine eCig available ... for those that have kicked the addiction but still enjoy 'the habit'.

you can bet they will want them banned as well. Just as a thought, more people are killed or seriously injured in motor accidents than smoking related so why dont they put big pictures of injuries sustained by RTA victims on every car as they do with cigarettes.
