Re: How many 70 year olds go to the gym?
I go to the gym several times a week, it is a myth that it is all about, weight loss or body building
I swim , do jogging, cycling, some weights, but not many, I have also signed up for a couple of classes to help improve general fitness, my gym always has at least 3 members of staff on the floor at any time and they are always there to help or to advise
it is too easy to be dismissive , if you have never tried it or base your assumption on hearsay or mis information
my advice for what it is worth, is go down , have an introductory session and then decide, but it is foolish to dismiss looking after your health based on nothing but a few posts on a forum and a lack of knowledge

Based on my own experience of joining a gym where they made me sign up and pay for a year at extortionate rates and then introduced me to various instruments of torture, I'd say they're a load of rubbish. I use the money I would spend on a gym membership on buying wine boxes and bottles of vodka which I carry back from the supermarket, and that's uphill!

Glad to hear your good news melsea. My husband spent a lot of time in China and became a big fan of Tai Chi, he does this everyday. It's gentle exercise and supposed to be really good for you. He keeps trying to persuade me to do it. I think when people are in their sixties like us it's far preferable to going to a gym. The main thing is to keep active.melsea wrote:I can tell you from experience that exercising is not just about being thinner, it's all about keeping your body in good working order and your ability to heal and recover from any ailments or serious illness.
My OH who those of you may know was taken ill last November. As a result he was in hospital for a total of 28 days and had a 4 hour operation, a nurse who was part of the healing process said her husband took a year to recover from it. We thought wow that's serious. OH had operation, sent home after 11 days and 3 weeks later went back for a check up and they were astounded at how well he looked.
Two things aid his recovery, 1. He has good healing genes 2. Up until that point he and I went to our local club doing various classes 6 days a week. His blood pressure was the best on the ward and they said because he did that exercise he was able to heal quicker than most.
Believe me it's never too early or ate to do some form of exercise, there are two types of it, one for being active which helps the niggles at bay, the other is varied exercise involving moving in all directions, getting the heart rate up and if you can low bearing weight exercisers to keep healthy bones and muscles. I know that if I do not exercise my muscle around near my elbow plays up.
Exercises keeps your body well oiled like your car. If you leave it sitting there it will seize up just like a human body.
Today we got a letter to say the scan my OH got says he is clear of cancer and that the minute bit they did find did not spread. Good news today, it was a miracle they found it.
So folks whether you feel and look healthy it's good to do excercise. By the way I still go to our club but OH cannot do the same exercise as I do as he cannot do anything that requires stomach exercise but he can walk so that's where we shall be n our next cruise in less than two weeks walking around the top decks.

Not only that, but a friend of mine with raised cholesterol, no other risks whatsoever, aged 77, works out, walks everywhere, was put on statins which have caused terrible muscle pain and a cough. She has told her doc she is coming off them. I did a cardiovascular risk assessment for her online from one of the hospitals. her risk of a cardiovascular event is 2.7% which is less than the average in the UK. I give up

Sounds like good exercise to me. Walking and lifting heavy weights - what more could you want and probably a lot cheaper.HK phooey wrote:Based on my own experience of joining a gym where they made me sign up and pay for a year at extortionate rates and then introduced me to various instruments of torture, I'd say they're a load of rubbish. Having spent a day sanding, painting, and moving furniture around (This is before the decorator gets here!!), I dont feel much like pumping iron. At 72 I'm afraid that although my BMI is below 25, and I have dropped two waist sizes in trousers since last June, I am never going to have a washboard stomach and my only chance of a six pack is if I buy some San Miguel at Waitrose for a BBQ.

I haven't stamped on anyone since I gave up playing rugby 45 years ago.
