Hi Alan,

I didn't get my understanding regarding the use of a comma at the end of a salutation from secretarial school - just boring ordinary school. However - I understand that in more recent times (aka after I left school) that fully indented was replaced by half indented, half blocked and fully blocked!

I remember the lessons about use of a comma so very well - admist the candlelight and quill pens, yes - I can still remember that!

I don't worry about anyone's punctuation, as long as something is readable I don't see it matters if someone puts a comma or a full stop in the wrong place.

There is a thread running on another forum about this and tbh those making the most noise are the worst offenders, I suppose it takes all sorts

I agree with you Dancing Queen. It matters little whether punctuation and grammar are right as long as I can read it. It's also true that some of those who profess to be so knowledgeable make the most mistakes. I suppose it takes all sorts.

Punctuation and grammar have a time and place.

I agree that on something such as a forum it does not matter that much as long as the message "gets across" - however getting either of them wrong can totally change what is being said.

Given the 'chimpanzee' scrawl that I am required to interpret for Letters to the Editor and given the often illogical, contradictory and incoherent way some people write in, the correct use of punctuation is vital in written communications.
