Hi Alan,
I didn't get my understanding regarding the use of a comma at the end of a salutation from secretarial school - just boring ordinary school. However - I understand that in more recent times (aka after I left school) that fully indented was replaced by half indented, half blocked and fully blocked!
I remember the lessons about use of a comma so very well - admist the candlelight and quill pens, yes - I can still remember that!

I don't worry about anyone's punctuation, as long as something is readable I don't see it matters if someone puts a comma or a full stop in the wrong place.
There is a thread running on another forum about this and tbh those making the most noise are the worst offenders, I suppose it takes all sorts

I agree with you Dancing Queen. It matters little whether punctuation and grammar are right as long as I can read it. It's also true that some of those who profess to be so knowledgeable make the most mistakes. I suppose it takes all sorts.
I'm away now to check mine!!!

who cares as long as you can get the gist
mind you when the pedants can't punctuate properly and the braggarts can't spell, that is bloody funny

Punctuation and grammar have a time and place.
I agree that on something such as a forum it does not matter that much as long as the message "gets across" - however getting either of them wrong can totally change what is being said.

Dear John:
I want a man who knows what love is all about. You are generous, kind, thoughtful. People who are not like you admit to being useless and inferior. You have ruined me for other men. I yearn for you. I have no feelings whatsoever when we're apart. I can be forever happy--will you let me be yours?
Gloria

Yours,
Gloria

Silver Shiney:
Your illustration shows the importance of punctuation.
Given the 'chimpanzee' scrawl that I am required to interpret for Letters to the Editor and given the often illogical, contradictory and incoherent way some people write in, the correct use of punctuation is vital in written communications.

I received a letter earlier this week and it took me a few moments to puzzle out that, instead of "to", they meant "too".

To the best of my ability: Gloria was a character in the series 'It Ain't Half Hot Mum', or possibly Queen Elizabeth l (or was she Gloriana?).

Come on, MM, you didn't even mention apostrophes (or apostrophe's as some would have it)
