Moderation

Unread post by HK phooey »

Why oh why are so many posts deleted? Doesn't that in itself interrupt the flow of threads? I really don't get it, there is no product here to protect so what's wrong with a bit of banter or heated discussion even? What happens if some sanctimonious sod stumbles across LOTP and complains, does that get the Big Brother treatment too?

If the moderators were upset at the gentle jibe between Degsy and I about his new signature then I have to apologise.

But it will make me consider, to paraphrase Groucho Marks, whether I want to continue being a conrtributor to the forum.

HK Phooey:

Whilst there is a need to remove truly offensive posts and those that promulgate hate crime in all it's forms, moderation on this site is rather cloying and 'nannying'.

The price one pays for having moderators who are contributors too.

~~~
Towny44 :
At least your harmless and inoffensive post was removed rather than interfered with and left on in some truncated form with a 'note from teacher' which leaves more Q&As than answers from members about other members.
I have just had a (quick) look and in total there were 7 posts deleted yesterday ... I know we all have different definitions of 'many' but 7 posts in one day is not 'many' in my book (however that is above the daily average for this site). If we look at what was deleted
- 4 posts were deleted yesterday following complaints by other members about yet another thread being taken off topic with sillyness (it looks like one other post got cleaned up slightly to remove the off topic stuff from the thread).
- I personally deleted 2 other posts (both made by myself) because they queried a date a poster had used ... the OP then clarified the date, I fixed it in their original post and removed the posts I made asking if the date was correct, I also removed their response telling me the correct date
Derek, yet again I will explain to you that you will not receive the special treatment you seem to want ... the clearly defined rules will be applied to you in exactly the same manner as all other users.
I have locked this topic and suspect that it may be deleted later.
This topic is titles "Moderation" and is asking some valid questions.
As Moderators on this forum we all make "judgement decisions" about what is posted and, despite the concerns of some, those decisions are based on what is posted and not who has posted it. These decisions are based on what has been posted, the context in which it is posted and whether there have been any complaints/reports about what has been posted.
The point that, if my understanding is correct, that the OP raised was about some "banter" within a topic and in general I would agree that some banter is good for the forum but in this case it was taking over the topic and was taking it completely off course - had the comments been made elsewhere (the Smiles topic for example) then I doubt that any action would have been needed.
All the Moderators are human and will on occasions get it wrong.
In this instance I cannot see any correlation between Moderators who post and the actions taken.
If anyone has any further concerns in this area will they please PM me.
I am relocking this topic.
