BT e mail updates?

Unread post by Frank Manning »

Is anyone else getting repeated messages from BT requesting they update/confirm their email address?
Do we have to keep updating until BT gets tired of the game. Or is it a scam?

I've had a couple but I am pretty sure it is a scam to get you to put your password into a fake site so they can use your e-mail account for their own foul deeds ! If you log into your BT mail account (without using the link in the e-mail) you will see that there is no requirement to update your details

BT wrote to all their customers a little while ago advising them that they have zillions of unused e-mail accounts and that unless you use them on a regular basis they would be deleted.

But if you use Outlook Express, for example, then all those accounts that are included in the set-up will be regarded as having been used each time you do a Send / Receive.

So ... how long is it since you logged onto and / or used each and every one of your Accounts / Sub accounts ?

If the answer is other than none then you need to send a message or two to yourself from each of your accounts, all copied to all of your accounts.

If this is the reason then the messages from BT will stop after you have completed the plan above.
Keep smiling, it's good for your well being

I use Outlook 90% of the time, and just one email address. Its also accessible via BTYahoo. although I find the Yahoo access less user friendly, and mostly use it when on a cruise.

QB, unfortunately I have already answered one such e mail and link, so if it is a scam, then they may already be into my email A/C. I dont really want to change my email account so I will just have to sit tight and see what happens. Luckily I do have a PC savvy BT area manager as a friend.

Many thanks for your help.

They also have access to your Address Book and everybody in there.

Personally I would open a BT sub account and then make ' it ' the main e-mail Account, this is done after completing the BT/Yahoo login. Outlook will need to be redefined of course but that is not difficult if you note down all the details for the existing one.

If you still have the email Frank it may be worthwhile forwarding it to the official BT Customer Services email address, or ringing them up to confirm whether the email was genuine or not.
It will either put your mind at rest or give them the chance to offer advice as to any threats it may contain, and any action you may need to take.

I also received this message and decided it was a scam so deleted it. I've received another e-mail which relates to my iphone and ipad so I'll ring BT to see if it's genuine. It's such a pity that we are suspicious of many of the messages we receive these days. :(

Although not 100% foolproof but the address od the site (not the link in the email) is usually a give away as to the validity of the site.

If you hover your mouse over the link in the email then a box should pop up showing the name of the site that you will be sent to. If it shows something like "http/bt.fredblogs.somesite.com/login/myaccount" then it is a phishing site

If there were not so many nasty minded criminals up to no good, we wouldn't be so suspicious.

I enjoy that TV programme which shows people fighting back at criminals. I must admit that when that burglar came over the gate about 25 yards from me a few weeks ago, the first thing I thought was "Right, I'll get you!" Luckily for me, he was about 50 years younger and was back over the gate before I had moved a couple of yards.

My BT manager friend, says that he thinks the BT messages are genuine, because they are having trouble with the switch over from BRYahoo mail. He is getting them as well.

Anyway thanks for your advice everyone, I have already changed my password.

Frank, I know what you mean.

Slightly off topic, my OH answered a call from Santander yesterday and they asked for her to confirm her DoB and security code number on her debit card. I desperately tried to stop her giving the details but was too late. Cue big argument. The caller wanted to speak to me as well but I accidentally cut him off. When I dailled 1471, the number given was a generic 'Santander called but couldn't reach you' message.

Next thing I was frantically 'phoning my bank branch, telephone banking dept and security. Their advice was that they could either cancel her card or we could wait and see if there is any unusual activity on the account. Then I got an email saying our complaint had been resolved - which was something to do with an account change and the complaint had been set up by our branch on my OH's behalf. When I rang the number given, I was told the 'phone call was related to that but according to the notes, 'the husband cut off the call because he thought it was a scam.' They didn't ring back and at no time did the original caller say what the call was about.

Peace has returned to the Keech house.

Along a similar vein I had a problem (well actually the bank had a problem) recently and rang me on a "Withheld" number which as a matter of principle we do not answer so did not get the call. They left a message which necessitated calling an 0845 number - not impressed.

A wonderful hour and half this morning trying to get my BT server to accept my password. It was quite happy yesterday, but this morning, no way. In the end I had to go through the Outlook set up all over again to get it to work. The on line help provided by BT might be OK for ages 3 to 43, but approaching 73 I find it a mystery.
