The reason probably has something to do with the hike in prices during School holidays.

If that is the reason then some people have not been keeping an eye on the websites and TA windows ... there have been some amazing deals over the summer months.Onelife wrote:The reason probably has something to do with the hike in prices during School holidays.

Re: I wonder
we overlapped with the end of the hols - yes, the prices were lower, but mainly the places are less crowded, and the weather is still good.

Re: I wonder
I think that maybe for loads of people it's a chance to get away before the colder weather sets in, combined with the fact that as the schools have now opened again the prices are more reasonable and the crowds are less (or less hurried).
Whatever - I just hope that anyone having a holiday now is going to have a really lovely relaxing time.

Maybe it's the temperatures. A bit too hot in August in the Med?

Re: I wonder
lets be honest
its coz the little buggers are back at school and wont be underfoot and getting in the way of the fossils on their hols.
this way the fossils can take an age to go from one end of the ship to the other ,whilst barging people out of the way with their scooters and zimmer frames, without having to be careful of the kids
it also means the fossils can hog all the seats in the cafe's and bars and fall asleep , thus robbing everyone else of a decent seat around the ship
rather go in term time than be stuck in floating retirement home

Re: I wonder
We normally try to avoid going anywhere at all in August because of the hoards of tourists who arrive in Darzet without having a clue about driving on anything other than a Motorway.
September is so peaceful and October even more so.

Good Lord DK, I cruise out of season and I've never found it like that? What ship have you been on where it's like a floating retirement home?

One example from us ... Oriana to the Fjords, the age dropped 20 years or more on the following cruise.lioness wrote:Good Lord DK, I cruise out of season and I've never found it like that? What ship have you been on where it's like a floating retirement home?

Is this retirement home available on the NHS? If so, sign me up!
But seriously, the Fjords, which we love, is not a prime destination for young people, such as our offspring, who prefer toasting on a beach somewhere. And Oriana is not a prime choice ship for young people either, being of the traditional persuasion.

Ventura to the Fjords out of term time
we felt like the teenagers of the cruise both being under 40 at the time
the ship seemed deserted after about 11.00-11.30

Re: I wonder
Order of precedence for criteria on choosing a cruise (P&O):
1. ex.UK roundtrip
2= - Duration (more than 14n) and time of year. As the sole employee of one of my occupations I have to plan well ahead statutory meetings' timings, preparartion of them and minutes. I i/d'd the forthcomning Oriana 20/9 17n Venice back early this year but decided to wait till the fare came down (Getaway) to a level I was comfortable with. I have b/f one meeting by one week and put back another meeting by a week to allow for all meeting prep and post meeting work (minutes).
4. Avoid school holidays (or take an adults only ship - this is the first time we have sailed on an adults only cruise)
4. Not the Oceana.
5. No Freedom Dining.
6. More Formal and Jacket nights.
7. Ports preference for Venice or/and Istanbul.

Re: I wonder
Absolutley right as far as we are concerned. Traffic around Bourenmouth and Poole can be horrendous in the school summer holidays. We have been trying to carry out some improvements to our house, still not finished, but we are going to have a break now.Manoverboard wrote:We normally try to avoid going anywhere at all in August because of the hoards of tourists who arrive in Darzet without having a clue about driving on anything other than a Motorway.

To be fair, these days 75% of shops in the High Street of town A can also be found in town B ( and C,D,E & F) so there's not much point in going in the mainstream shops.

Re: I wonder
Bristol's got quite a good "high street" (the A38 heading north from "The Arches" in Montpelier). Sure, there is a Tesco and a Sainsbugs, and a few charity shops, but there are a lot of long-established, quirky, independents. The city centre itself, though, is a dump, with all the usual multinationals. Not so ancient mariner wrote:To be fair, these days 75% of shops in the High Street of town A can also be found in town B ( and C,D,E & F) so there's not much point in going in the mainstream shops.
