Another possibility is a flood, retreat, and reflood of the Black Sea.

There is certainly archaeological evidence of this event which corroborates ancient accounts from both Biblical and other sources.

just about every religion has a flood story and a creation myth
despite the rather overplayed jeering from the cheap seats, there is no evidence that there is not a God

If you need evidence then you have no faith.

QB

The whole crux of any religion is faith, some have it ,some do not
but to continually abuse and denegrate other people coz they have faith ,shows how shallow and self absorbed that abusive person really is

There is no evidence that the Pastafarian 'deity' of The Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster does not live and reside in all men's hearts and garden sheds but I refuse to allow hard science and reality get in the way of my "faith".

Creation 'story' - not necessarily 'myth' To me there is no fundamental incompatibility between Darwin's theory and the story as told in Genesis. The difference is that Genesis explains it using analogies, so that would be understood by the people of the time when it was written.

Using an analogy myself, can you imagine trying to explain the 'Big Bang' theory to the average 'man in the street' even only a few hundred years ago??

An atheist has to know a lot more than I know. An atheist is someone who knows there is no god. By some definitions atheism is very stupid.

As quoted in "A tribute to Carl Sagan: A Sagan File" by Joel Achenbach in Skeptic Magazine, Vol 13, No. 1 (2006)

There is no dispute that you (as with all others) are fully entitled to your 'faith'. The issue here is that not only do you tend to go on about it at every possible opportunity, but you choose make facile remarks that belittle those who hold any beliefs contrary to your own.

Well said Notso. As I said last night, why is it so important to atheists to try to get others to think as they do?

I don't know if you see yourself as a recruiting sergeant for 'Atheists R Us', but I have to say that you are not having much luck on this group.

If you look at Genesis and the Evolution/Big bang theories closely, you will see the similarities in the order things happen.

All that is different is the time factor.

If you allow that one Genesis day might be umpteen millennia - it works perfectly

I was at a church today on.Corfu, where they were celebrating a Holy Day..the love and warmth that came from those people to us, was amazing and humbling... This is what faith does..
I'm rather drunk at the moment, hope this post comes across as I meant it.

Sue Spud:

I too am moved by displays of worship and devotion, and especially in Orthodoxy and rites that follow Tridentine Mass protocols.

The sung masses and services in Latin or Greek are some of the most beautiful 'noises' that humans can make.

Religiously inspired architecture and art is also some of the most beautiful cultural aspects of human endeavour.

My "beef" is with the many who lead in religion and especially with those from the Christian Right, über orthodoxy, Rome, Orthodox Judaism, and most of Islam is their desire, driven by faith in dogma, ( and for personal control of peoples and self enrichment in crude hard cash) to supplant science with fairy tales (and worse) and the oppression of women, gay men and women, those of other faiths or no faith at all, brainwashing of children, and the concept of apostasy as justifying punishment up to and including death.

I can agree with you in as much that extremists are bad news in any organisation; but you make the mistake of tarring everyone with the same brush.

As the Woolly Mammoths have reached extinction there seems little point in continuing this topic
