I'll hold my hands up and admit to being banned from a web site technical support forum.

I told them in no uncertain terms what a piece of cr*p their software was (no not P&O's :) ). For some funny reason they took humbridge to my remarks and pulled the plug.

I lost sleep that night for Oh, now let me think, all of five seconds.

Just here Notso. Thankfully he was banned from the IOW in 1972 after a lewd incident involving one of Blackgang's dinosaurs.

I do enjoy listening to some of the chants coming from the terraces which are often very amusing.

Some years ago in a match against Dunfermline, at Ibrox Park (in the days when Gazza was playing for Rangers - and also having well publicised 'marital problems' ) Gazza was put clean through into a one on one against the Dunfermline keeper. Unfortunately for him, he made a mess of the shot, which was easily dealt with by the keeper.

At this point the Dunfermline fans started singing:

If ye cannae beat the goalie, beat yer wife...........!
what intrigues me is how these things start. It takes a lot of voices to make an effect. So how does it work?

do they plan a selection on the coach down?

One of the best I heard was when Goram said he had a split personality and the fans chanted '2 Andy Gorams theres only 2 Andy Gorams' :)

Also the Suarez one Stoke fans did after Suarez ahd been done for racialism.

'He cheats he dives, he hates the Jackson 5.. Suarez Suarez'

:)

You have to admit there is humour at football matches. Not always in the best of taste, but humour none the less. :) :)

I love the spontaneous humour of a football match.

A few years ago we were playing Blackburn and one of their players had been in the newspapers for having an extra marital affair. From the moment he touched the first ball he was greeted with 'Does your missus, does your missus, does your missus know you're here? Does your missus know you're here?'

Meg, usually it starts with one wag with a loud voice who is then joined by several others and before long a whole section of the crowd will be singing it. As you can see the verses are usually very simple, even I can remember them!!!

Of course, when Brighton come to town, there's a whole new set of chants going around!

Little surprises me about the "humour" around the squalid world of football, given the knuckle draggers the game attracts both on the field and on the terraces.

Don't believe the bluff and bluster NSAM, I suspect he's a season ticket holder at St Mary's. .... but unsurprisingly doesn't want to admit it!

You don't think he's a rugby man then? Of course that would have to be the original kind with the right number of players. None of these cheap northern imitations.......! :) :)

1. Do not follow or participate (play or spectate) in any sport.

2. Consequently, I do not visit St Mary's.

3. Once, about 12 years ago, went as a guest to The Dell to watch Southampton vs Arsenal. As someone who advocates that one should try everything once in your life (except incest, buggery and Scottish Country dancing) I do not condemn till I try. I found the atmosphere deeply unpleasant including the use of crude and offensive language directed at the players and match officials and monkey chanting when a player of African ancestry had possession. I also went about 25 years ago (?) as a guest for the first time to a 'first class' RU match (an international - the first between England and Argentina since the Falklands War) and the language directed at the Argentines was disgusting.

4. Whilst in a free society I believe that all sport, pastimes and interests should be allowed (which is why I support the Countryside Alliance to repeal the Hunting with Hounds Act, even though personally I dislike fox hunting) there is far too much coverage in news media of this so called national game of football.

I think you'll find the reason within this. The news media cover what their followers want to see and hear. You won't find much coverage of Morris Dancing these days.

Degsy, I was alarmed to see the omission of 'romancing sheep' on your things you'd never try list.
Football is a great game, you just don't get it. I attended my first match at White Hart Lane when I was 5. I had no interest in football at the time, I just wanted to go where my dad and big brother were going. For the next ten years I hardly missed a home match, the atmosphere, the excitement and the passion for the team were addictive. I never witnessed any hooliganism and the end of the ground we stood in, the Paxton, was for families so there was no bad language. Though I deplore the transformation of top flight football to a multi billion dollar business, making regular match attendance unattainable for many, my love of the game remains. I gained the same pleasure watching my eldest son play Sunday matches for 10 years, though some of the language from other parents and managers was appalling.

HK, I was born within kicking distance of The Lane and used to go there quite often in the late sixties. Since my daughter started taking an interest at Italia 90 I have now progressed to a pair of season tickets at St Mary's but I still have relations who follow the Lilywhites.

QB:

Whilst no doubt Morris Dancing has its followers and participants it would not generally form part of a news bulletin nor have hours of programming or acres of newsprint devoted to it.

I would like to see sport moved off news bulletins and more international coverage of political and business news placed in the vacant place instead. Sometimes even the wretched game of football is the lead item on news, as well as other sports, for what appear to be fixtures that are endlessly repeated every year. By all means have separate programming for the minority sport of football (in fact any sport is only of minority interest vs the overall population, whereas politics (local, national and international) and much business news impacts on us all to a lesser or greater extent.

Those are what is known as 'slow news days'.
To a certain degree I would agree with you when there is obviously many important things going on around the world that deserve more coverage ... it used to be limited to 5 minutes towards the end of the news but it has crept in to overtake the content ... probably cheaper to edit and produce .... we now have sports channels that provide 24/7 coverage.

The irony is I have access to 'boxes' in several top stadiums within the UK and occasionally get invites to functions during/after matches that sometimes has included the management and players post match ... I have absolutely no interest in football and usually spend the time propping up the bar ... much easier to get served while the game is on :) My neighbour who usually gets the passes was talking about going to watch his favourite tribe, Arsenal, playing towards the end of October .. he thinks he can get a couple of tickets to the VIP area (he can watch while I prop up the bar).
