Free cloud storage

Kim DotCom online cloud storage

Not sure on whether or not to trust this guy, but 50Gb of online storage for free is really setting a new standard ... especially with the encryption that he claims to be using. I have signed up anyway, but am unlikely to use it for a while until it settles down (don't want to miss out on 50Gb).

Hi Ken - a lot of folk who have BT Internet also have a large amount of free storage. I use mine for all my backup stuff.

That is my concern David, I just can't get past his history. However, given the fact it is free 50Gb of online storage and it is encrypted client side (apparently), it may be a worthwhile secondary store.

I have recently come across another new cloud storage. It offers 15Gb free plus an extra 5Gb if you use a referral link (if anybody wants a referral link then PM me and I will send you one ... it means I also get an additional 5Gb).

Once signed up you can refer all your chums and you can get an additional 5Gb for free for each person that signs up. it is claimed this is only an introductory offer.

With BT, the standard free storage package is only 2GB, to get their free 50GB deal, you have to be a user of one of their more expensive packages.

I know what you mean. I keep chucking stuff at the clouds but it keeps dropping back down. Do I need to practice more at getting my i in.

The office is moving all its data to "the cloud". My worries are: what happens if the internet connection goes down? what happens if the owner of the off-site server goes bust? what happens if it gets hacked? what happens if their drives suffer catastrophic failure and that's when we find their backup facilities didn't work?

I'd feel much safer keeping my data on an external HDD under my own control.

Much wiser, all hard drives end in failure. Use two and live longer.

A reputable cloud supplier will be far more secure than personal HDDs ... For many reasons including encryption (some do some don't), enterprise disk drives (not less reliable ones used by home users), data redundancy, RAID, data duplication, proper backup procedures, disaster recovery strategy etc. Etc.

That is not to say you should not consider having your own backups, it provides another layer of protection and, more importantly means I can access my data anywhere in the world.
