Re: Smoking in prisons to be banned
Previous comments I have made about the trending of who are now typical smokers (less than 22% of the adult education) would seem to be vindicated in that 80% of the prison population smoke!

Re: Smoking in prisons to be banned
That's excellent news. So, the majority of the c80% of adults who smoke are locked up? Perhaps we could close the circle by locking up everyone who smokes and using stopping smoking as an incentive for early release?
If everyone who was imprisoned had to smoke, then that would reduce the potential for legal action on passive smoking, wouldn'i it?

I can find nothing as high as this. What is your source?

Hmmm I wonder what the punishment will be if they are found "flouting the rules" unlike a cruise ship they can hardly disembark them at the next port
Whilst I agree there shouldn't be one rule for one and a different one for another this deals with a whole different issue, it will be interesting to see if it ever happens !!!

I presume you mean 'population' not 'education' since it makes no sense otherwise, but that aside you're reading way too much into that figure. The Monocled Mutineer wrote:Previous comments I have made about the trending of who are now typical smokers (less than 22% of the adult education) would seem to be vindicated in that 80% of the prison population smoke!
Tobacco is a currency in prison, and not everyone who handles it will smoke. You're trying to suggest that the 22% of adults who smoke consist of criminals and other such undesirables, but really the figures don't support that at all.
They're just figures. Next year, with smoking banned, the figures will say 0% of prisoners smoke. Would you then accept that the figures prove all criminals come from the (smoke free) upper classes? Of course not, but it would be as statistically valid.

I don't understand why prisoners would not be allowed to smoke in a designated outside area ? Surely they could do that with no threat then of lawsuits from other prisoners or warders for inhalation of second hand smoke. I realise that prisoners don't get unlimited access to an outside area but surely access at set times of day could be arranged ? I don't smoke myself but I can see that enforced abstinence will cause all sorts of problems for the warders who have to deal with it.

Smoking in prisons to be banned?
Whatever next?.... not allowing drugs and mobile phones probably. At this rate, they won't even be allowed to go home on an evening!

I assume that more prison staff will be employed to cope with the increase in violence which would follow such a ban.
One day P&O will cruise out of the north.....

They aren't warders, they are officers and have been for many years!!!!Jacknian wrote:I don't understand why prisoners would not be allowed to smoke in a designated outside area ? Don't be silly, they are getting rid of more and more each week.Admiral of the Humber wrote:I assume that more prison staff will be employed to cope with the increase in violence which would follow such a ban.
The government won't be happy until the prisoners are running the prisons!!!

One would hope that some form of nicotine replacement will be made available.

Re: Smoking in prisons to be banned
I wonder if there is any subject posted in which Derek Kane has not tried to spout some lies or other such dogma about smoking
as usual it is just another thinly veiled insultt to try to get an argument going about smoking
the truth is that everyone is now wise to this childish attempt at provocation and it is about time Mr Kane grew up
no doubt this will be edited

Re: Smoking in prisons to be banned
Yes smoking should be banned in prisons and I couldn’t give a dam how much they suffer getting over the withdrawal symptoms...they wouldn’t be there if they hadn’t made someone else suffer.
If they start kicking off... pepper spray then, if that doesn’t work take away their televisions, reading material and three course meals.
It’s about time we started making prisons a place to fear, and not as it is now a bl**dy holiday camp.
Oh Yes’ and I hope the person who nicked my car is now serving time...better still ...a heavy smoker.
Regards
OL
P.s Good job I’m such a forgiving person.

Back on topic, if law abiding smokers cannot smoke in public places, then prisoners should not be able to either. Prison should be a place to fear, not a place to go for a rest between crimes
