So my laptop is giving me problems and even though I have had infinity installed I am still only getting a download speed of 9 mbs (it does shoot up with an ethernet cable attached). So I have been looking at the Apple Macbook Pro 13".
Do any of you out there have this laptop and if so have you encountered any problems with it.
I have also been looking at the ipad 2 16gb but this would defeat the object as I still need a fastworking laptop.
I live in an area where the speed is not very good because we live on a small exchange although BT say that it would improve with infinity, but it wont
With the cable attached the speed goes up to 39.... I am still on windows xp and got the laptop in 2006 so it is old. Yes I clean it down quite often but the most ram I can get in it is 2gb...
If the speed goes up when using a cable then it is nothing to do with the broadband connection. The connection from the exchange to your "box" is the same.
This sounds like a problem with your wi-fi, most probably because your laptop is, as you say, old then the way that it connects is probably using old technology (there have been several updated wi-fi protocols). Also from memory I don't think that XP is particularly good at handling wi-fi as it is something that gained popularity well after XP was introduced and it was not built into it.
I would agree with David .. the problem is likely to be your laptop's wifi.
What spec is the laptop? If all you do is a bit of word processing, spreadsheet work, presentations, photos, surfing the web etc. then 2Gb memory is more than enough. If you do a lot of video work then it is a bit tight.
You may be able to add better wifi using a USB dongle device (look for 802.11n). ... but, as David says, XP is not the best for that. The next best thing would be to try a clean install of Windows 7 (assuming the spec is adequate) ... in situ upgrades leave too many artefacts about. The problem is that all this could be expense with no ultimate gain.
At the minute I am finding it hard to know what to suggest in the laptop market .. I am not a fan of Windows 8 (it really is another Windows ME or Windows Vista product .. a half way house until they get it working properly) and I consider Apples to be very over priced (more style over substance). At the minute I general suggest people consider a 10" tablet (Google Nexus, Samsung Galaxy etc.), however you say that is not suitable for your needs ... therefore I would suggest looking out for a cheapish laptop that comes with Windows 7 ... there are some that cost no more than £300-400 that will meet most users non gaming requirements.
On the point of Windows 8 there is a major upgrade (8.1?) due within the next few months which is claimed to address a lot of the criticisms of Win8. Also remember that Win8 is designed to be used on a touch screen.
I have my new laptop and its working ok although I have temporarily lost my email account.. I am still trying to find my way around it but am sure I will get there eventually.... I also managed to play currys and pc world off against each other and save a couple of hundred pounds which cant be bad. I cant get used to a mac mouse though... it seems to have a mind of its own..

You will get used to the mouse (Ctrl and click on Mac is the same as Rt click on Windows systems).
The only thing you'll regret about getting a Mac is that you didn't do it years ago. It really is chalk and cheese when compared with MS systems; no more clogged registries, no more 5 minute boot-ups etc etc.
I am in my 8th year of owning MacBooks (two in all that time) and can honestly say I've never had a 'crash' causing me to power down etc. My last windows machine I was obliged to perform the Microsoft salute (ctrl alt del) before the first day was out.
Come back in a month and tell everyone what a world of difference it is.
