A rather tacky Amercanism
nothing to do with children rebeling or dressing up, if anything it is an affectation.
clothes don't make the person and they never will and anyone who thinks they do is deluded

They grow up quickly enough as it is in the spotlight of our modern media so I'm afarid its "Bah humbug!" as far as I am concerned. A school disco from age 14 is quite sufficient.

Miss AOTH and her friends absolutely loved their prom. Everybody made an effort, the girls especially and the boys as well and everybody was well behaved. Two hundred kids were a credit to their parents and teachers.

They grow up to soon? They are all sixteen for heavens sake...they are grown up.

If nothing else they were doing their bit (a very big bit in the case of Miss AOTH) to spend West Hull out the recession.

Bah Humbug you miserable old so and so's

I had a prom in year 11 and one in year 13. We were the first year to have one at year 11 in my school. The first dress was affore mentioned by SS, the second was a dress I bought myself from Debenhams and wore the same jewellery and shoes to both. Didn't bother with limos etc. I did enjoy my proms, but I think it was before they went completely ott, as they seem to be now

We didn't even have disco's, dances or anything when I was at school, although it was an all girls school in Hull.

We have gone too American in a lot of things nowadays. As for the proms, it is fine except for the parents of those who would never probably have the opportunity to wear such a dress again and a parent feels pressured into paying out money they can ill afford to make their daughters look as good as the other girls. It seems to get more out of hand every year.

I am not a party pooper but do feel for those who really have a problem paying out good money for a one off event that could be used for a more useful item or family holiday.

My opinion only

Hi Mavis,

You’re certainly not alone in what you think as I also think the same. We should stop importing this Americanised falseness which in my opinion is sending out all the wrong messages to our kids.

What’s next...? Parents entering children into beauty pageants making them look like downtown hookers? As for all the imported American teen programs which seem to be on every other channel... all they do is give the impression you’re a freak if you haven’t lost your virginity by the age of 14.

Oh yes! And it’s the Americans who are responsible for importing the idea that every child is entitled to a present when living a Childs party (Party bags) the person who dreamt that one up should be hung, drawn, and quartered.

“Have a nice day”

:)

Regards

Keith

When we lived in Stanmore (military housing in a very affluent area) our kids would come home with better presents than they took.

We hosted one party, and every kid left with a piece of birthday cake and a balloon. The parents thanked us for restoring sanity.

Hundreds of thousands of children attend proms every year. Yes it's expensive, but if the experience of Miss AOTH and her chums is anything to go by I have no problems with it. The children had a thoroughly fantastic time as did all us parents who crowded round the venue watching the children arrive in an array of tacky and definitely not so tacky vehicles. It was all good clean (ish) fun.

Bah Humbug I say to you all.

There aren't very many opportunities for children and young people to really dress up these days, so those of us who want to continue dressing up on cruises should surely be encouranging these youngsters to take pride in their appearance and dress up smartly. I agree that it can get out of hand with limos etc, but i think the principle is good. Those who don't want to dress up on cruises are (I imagine) the ones who've never had chance to do it, and don't realise what fun it can be.

Way over the top for my liking.

My tastes are far more Puritan.

Good afternoon Mr Shiny,

A piece of cake and a balloon sounds like a good traditional birthday party to me and that’s exactly what the children would have got if they had attended one of our daughters parties...if I had, had my way that is...

Unfortunately due to girl pressure and the stigma they would have felt having not gone along with this ... “Where’s my party bag malarkey“ I did finally succumb but only when my wife and daughter agreed to giving them something useful instead of the customary party bag. ...they all left with a £1.20 nature magazine.

And a very good afternoon to you, dear sir.

I must admit, we did "cheat" a little with that party - we had it at the local McDonalds, but only because we were due to "march out" a few days later and, as our quarter was unusual in that it had fitted carpets (junior ranks' quarters were not allowed to have fitted carpets at that time, only carpet squares and you had to polish the lino underneath on march-out, but the previous occupant had a thalidomide child with no arms who used his bare feet), we didn't want party food being ground into the carpet.

Some of the kids' parties ours went to had magicians, clowns, bouncy castles..... Alright, I suppose, if you can afford it but there was no way we could compete with that.

Now’t wrong with an end of term dance Robbie but when it's advertised as a “prom” it takes on a whole different meaning and one which I think has got way beyond the pockets of some less well off parents.

Don't know why our identity is being corrupted by all things American and why people want to adopt these American customs. Speech, food, and proms, to name a few. It's as if leaving school has been made into this mega event, but why? People seem to want to have to go over the top with birthdays, weddings, etc. I think it is that what was accepted as the norm isn't good enough/exciting enough anymore.
