Then we concur ! Nothing against Halloween per se, just the way it has been hi-jacked with all those dreadful American "customs". Just an excuse for thuggish behaviour for many and an opportunity for the supermarkets to sell cheap, tacky themed items

Indeed! It is demanding money/sweets with menaces. And parents go along with it just to be the same as everyone else. I feel for the old folk, kids knocking on the door, maybe getting their windows and doors egged, I absolutely hate it.

Luckily, we live in an area with very few young families/children so do not get bothered too much but, even so, I keep my head down if the doorbell goes on the 31st !

When they say 'trick or treat?' Shout 'trick' and spray them with a water pistol.qbman1 wrote:Luckily, we live in an area with very few young families/children so do not get bothered too much but, even so, I keep my head down if the doorbell goes on the 31st !

I suspect that would guarantee worse than eggs being thrown at your house, not to mention an assault charge. Mo is quite right, it is demanding with menaces, and those parents who allow their brats to engage in this obnxious activity should be ordered to stop.

Oh yeah? Therafter then they will definitely egg your door/windows and even put a firework through your letterbox. Bl**dy American trashy customs. Why the hell have we, as a country, allowed this to happen? I would not let my grandchildren do it, neither would their mother or their father. Same with fireworks, being let off at all hours even though there is a rule about not letting them off after 11 pm. These selfish, inconsiderate people who don't give a jot about the rest of us, need stopping.

And that would stop them from taking civil action against the householder because.....? Re: Why do we have School Proms?
Such vitriol about a few American customs that become popular with the younger element of the population of the UK.
As with proms I have no problem with Halloween and trick or treating. For years we and three other families have had a Halloween party where the hosts have decorated the house with lanterns and cobwebs and both adults and children have dressed up as vampires, ghosts and witches and had a lovely time. The children have always gone trick or treating as part of the evening and almost always find that the people they "terrorise" enter into spirit of the occasion. I realise now that I am obviously very lucky to be the proud father of a cute little witch who has never done criminal damage to the property of somebody who didn't want to join in.
I suppose it's an age thing. Thankfully I consider myself to be a young man, still able to look the FUN in life, a bloke who doesn't waste his time letting insignificant nothings get him down. Proms, trick or treating and their ilk are FUN to the people (usually young people) who participate in them. I think it's a shame that old people don't get that concept and let them get on with it instead of pursing their lips like they've just eaten a particularly sour lemon and nit picking about the usually very minor negatives.
I like this Forum, but of late I have become particularly disappointed and frustrated with some of the miserable threads, particularly those that have a go at young people.
Good Evening.

AOTH, HK - I have no problem with kids having honest fun but I draw the line at wanton vandalism. Throwing eggs at windows and brickwork, tipping rubbish bins over into gardens is NOT honest fun. Perhaps you have better educated kids than there are round here.

Re: Why do we have School Proms?
I feel for those of you who have trouble on Halloween. I'm glad to say it's all fairly harmless and good spirited in our road. I don't agree with Halloween on religious grounds, but I would never take that out on the children who come knocking. Early evening it tends to be tiny children, accompanied by parents ... and they have really gone to loads of trouble to dress up and look scary (actually, mostly they look cute!) Later in the evening (but no later than about 9.30pm) the teenagers come round. Not such elaborate costumes, usually just a mask. I make sure my hallway and porch are well lit up. I don't hand out any money, but have a big basket of sweets which I keep behind the door and hand out to everyone who comes. It's only one evening, and a smile and a few sweets doesn't cost much!
I suppose it's the modern day equivalent of carol singing. I actually prefer it to carol singing as it's confined to one night, and children don't know any carols any more. You just get one verse of 'We wish you a merry Christmas'!

Unfortunately Robbie trick or treating isn’t played out the way you and I used to play it out and in certain areas it has become a nightmare for those on the receiving end.

Exactly. One little scrote lobs an egg at a house whilst trick or treating, so every child out trick or treating is a mindless hooligan. One set of thoughtless parents take a tired crying child into a cruise ship bar late at night, so all parents who take their children on cruise holidays are selfish and irresponsible and their children the cause of a ship full of ruined holidays. Give me strength. It's sad and I feel sorry for the people who think like that.

Rob, I understand where you are coming from but, for me, it was much more than one little scrote throwing eggs. I could have made several generous omelettes with what I had to remove from my walls.

I have only just read this thread and this is my first post on it, but I have to agree with you a lot of vitriol.
School proms came in after my children were at school, but the hotel I worked in we use to hold prom concerts and the children who attended them, loved them and really enjoyed them. They did not like that we knew they hid their bottles or cans of booze, they brought with them, in the bushes outside, which our porters then removed, but they had a great time, cannot recall any incidents.
As for trick and treat my daughter has always taken our grandchildren trick and treating, and they dress up for the occasion, they have never had any problems and have never splattered any houses with eggs.
I am of the older generation and we have children visit us trick and treating, we always have a bowl of sweets and chocolate available. I always put a candle lit pumpkin, which I carve a face on in the window, and have never experienced any problems, no eggs here. I find it helps if you enter into the spirit of the occasion.
The same with Carol Singers, especially children, providing they sing a complete verse and not just a single line. If they are very good, may give them some change, other than that it's sweets. Those who only sing a couple of words get nothing, but again I have never had any trouble.
Personally I think it is how you treat the children, when they knock on your door. I can honestly say I have never had anybody demand money with menaces.
