I haven’t ruled out buying second hand as I’m fully aware of the depreciation when buying new...especially after the first year.

I go for a pre- registered car if possible. My current one was 6 months old with 120miles on the clock when I bought it - and £6K off the list price. OK I could probably has negotiated £2K off the list price if I had bought a new one, but a £4k saving is still not to be sniffed at.

(1) Please excuse my ignorance but do all car dealers (Including Toyota dealers) sell pre-reg cars?

(2) Are there any pitfalls that one should be aware of using this method of purchase?

(3) Do the same warranties apply that would apply when purchasing a “new” car

(4) I don’t quite understand why a dealer would sell pre-reg cars...what’s the advantage to them when they could get more selling straight off the showroom ?

I believe it's to do with their dealer agreement. They have to register a minimum number of cars. I'm sure someone knows the whole story.

My bezzy mate who was in the motor trade for nearly 40 years says ...

Most, if not all, dealerships do this as their basic Master Plan is to ensure that they hit their quotas as agreed with the manufacturer ... bonuses to the dealership for meeting / exceeding sales targets for any given year far outstrips the loss of letting a few sell at a discounted price.

Such cars are often used as demos or by the principal ( head honcho ) ... normal conditions apply re warranty etc. No problems providing the car in question hasn't been involved in a bump, if it had been then this should have been documented.

Our car was a "demonstrator" - 6 weeks "old" and 13 miles on the clock. Because it was already registered to the dealership, I couldn't have the 3-year service plan that comes with new vehicles but I still got the 5-year manufacturer's warranty.
